Classic Punk Single of the Day: Dead Kennedys "Holiday In Cambodia"

dead_kennedys_cambodia_l1

On this date in 1981: Dead Kennedys released their second single, “Holiday In Cambodia,” backed by “Police Truck.” The A side appeared on their debut album, Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables, though it was different than the single version. This album is still the largest selling punk album in California history; followed closely by the debut from OC punk band, The Adolescents. Coincidently, I’m going to the Bowery Ballroom tonight to see former Adolescents’ bassist Steve Soto’s new band open for X. What goes around comes around.

I Stand By My Decision
A Guest Blog from Voiceover Actor Charlie Rengel

It’s been a long road leading to Election Day, and I’m confident that I’ve been following the right path towards a new future. I already knew that I would support the Democratic Party. The past 8 years have made me wary of Republicans, knowing that most would put their interests over the country’s. The Democrats had an admirable selection of presidential candidates over the Republicans, being narrowed down to Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. I had originally voted for Hillary Clinton as the nominee, giving in to the suspicions of Barack Obama’s “inexperience.” However, Obama had been gaining ground, and was selected over Clinton.

It was around then that I realized Barack Obama had a clear understanding of the problems facing the country and knew what had to be done. Shortly after the controversial sermon given by Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama responded with an intelligent, mature discussion on race-relations. (Jon Stewart from The Daily Show said, “For the first time, a politician talked to [the public] about race like we were adults”). I followed CNN, CNBC and MSNBC as well as the network news, ending the night with The Daily Show and Colbert Report. Whenever Obama spoke, he focused on the main issues and was always direct and sincere. Obama also knows how to choose the right people to assist him, when he selected his running mate Sen. Joe Biden. Biden’s experience in foreign policy alone made him a wise choice. The final months would prove to be an election-year to remember, especially against Republican front-runner Sen. John McCain.

T-Shirt of The Day: "Shut Up, PETA"

Zip It

Best Week Ever is talking about making the above awesome T-shirt. There’s a supplemental story here and a related previous Worleygig.com post here. If I weren’t afraid of PETA supporters trying to kill me, I’d be wearing one of those shirts (in pink, of course) right now!

“Meat Rocks!”

Now I would like to tell you a story, so let’s hop in the Way Back machine for a minute, because this story goes “Way Back” to when I was in my early twenties, and the phrase “Politically Correct” hadn’t even been invented yet. I used to be much more of a bleeding heart Liberal than I am now (if you can believe that). Although I’m an unapologetic lover of delicious meaty foods, I also love animals and am completely against unnecessary animal testing, so I used to give money to PETA. It seemed like the right thing to do and it made me feel like “part of the solution” as they say, rather than “part of the problem.”

After about two years of giving money to PETA and receiving their ridiculously short-sighted, self-righteous, militant vegetarian propaganda in the mail, I decided I was done with them. Because any organization that equates Colonel Sanders or McDonalds with Nazi Germany has to have its head up its ass. PETA annoyed me so deeply I wanted to eat meat just to piss them off.
