If you consider yourself to be any kind of fan of film director John Waters — his movies, his art, his overall outlook on life — then you need to head to Hollywood to check out the Academy Museum’s career-spanning exhibit, John Waters, Pope of Trash, which I was fortunate to see just before Christmas.
As a fun addendum to the exhibit’s many captivating galleries crammed with film clips, collectibles and costumes, the museum has added a display of John Waters‘ personal collection of Fan Art in the final gallery just prior to your exit through the gift shop (AKA Filth Shop).
This gallery is where I spotted a simply adorable little crocheted doll fabricated in the director’s likeness. While I’d guess that the doll’s creator took artistic license with the roundish body shape — because John Waters is fucking thin — I think he or she otherwise captured his essence down to the wire-thin mustache and bright pink suit, qualifying it for this week’s Pink Thing!
Update: It has been revealed that this doll is part a complete set of Pink Flamingos-themed dolls made by Crochet Encounters of a Woolie Kind! You can follow their Instagram account Here.
John Waters, Pop of Trash runs through August 2024 at the Academy Museum in Hollywood.
