Brazilian artist Marta Minujin’s recent artistic forays reflect the public and private nature of her practice. In addition to tackling works of remarkable ambition and scale — including huge inflatables presented in public venues — she unfailingly produces art in her long-standing studio making labor-intensive abstract paintings out of thousands of small strips of painted fabric, such as Sunrise in Patagonia (2012).

Densely layered, these pieces harken back to her lifelong obsession with stripes, originally seen in the twists and turns of her mattress constructions. They sensorial dimension, evokes, sound waves, or the blurred fuzz, vintage television screen. The allover affect further recalls the artist’s psychedelic drawings.
