After making his first frozen blood head Self (1991), contemporary British artist Marc Quinn continued to experiment with his own refrigerated likeness. With The Origin of Species (1993), the experiment became a way to examine the interconnectedness of humanity and nature.
The central metaphor of the sculpture is exemplified by the material – coconut water sourced from palm trees. Having served as sustenance and medicine in historical and contemporary context, this natural material has been linked to human survival.
The head is encased in a refrigeration unit to keep it frozen, emphasizing the fragility and transience of life.
