Do you enjoy the films of Director Wes Anderson? I sure do. Recently, I attended a group exhibit at NYC’s Spoke Art Gallery called Bad Dads: A Wes Anderson Tribute Show, which was completely amazing. Included were dozens of whimsical artworks by various artists who were inspired to interpret themes and characters found in Anderson’s various films. Fun!
This week’s Pink Thing, the depiction of four pink desserts by artist Anna Pan, in which apples feature prominently, was inspired by the film, Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009). Specifically, we can drill down and reveal that its title, Look At All This Apple Juice! is a quote from one of the film’s characters.
In Fantastic Mr. Fox, the “apple juice” line appears in the scene where the animals raid a warehouse owned by the farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. After sneaking into Bean’s facility, Kylie Sven Opossum (voiced by Wallace Wolodarsky) stumbles upon shelves of cider and exclaims:
“Look at all this apple juice!”
However, Mr. Fox (voiced by George Clooney) corrects him, saying:
“That’s not apple juice, it’s cider.”
This moment is both humorous and charming, capturing Kylie’s naivety and the whimsical tone of the movie. The cider becomes significant, as it’s a valuable and highly-prized commodity for the animals.
Further, Desserts, specifically pastries, have a memorable presence in Fantastic Mr. Fox, symbolizing both community and comfort. One notable dessert association is Ash’s Creamy Whipped Strawberry Tart (identifiable in the top lefthand corner of this print). Some fans speculate that Ash (Mr. Fox’s son) expresses himself through his artistic and peculiar personality, and a Pink Dessert (like a whipped strawberry tart) is imagined as a metaphor for his individuality. Though never explicitly mentioned, this dessert has become a fan-created concept to fit Ash’s quirky character.
