Get Paid $2K to Watch Rom-Coms With Your Squad

galentines graphic

Galentine’s Day, a holiday where ladies come together to celebrate other ladies (made popular by the TV show Parks and Recreation) traditionally takes place before Valentine’s Day. But since we are living in a Covid Time Warp, we can celebrate Galentine’s Day whenever we want, because rules no longer apply! That said, the team at US Dish (an authorized reseller of DISH Network Satellite TV) wants to offer one lucky person the dream job, where you can earn $2,000 for one evening’s work — all one the guise of a Galentine’s Day bash! You might remember that last year, US Dish paid someone $1,000 to watch 15 hours of The Office. This job is even sweeter:  US Dish will pay someone $2,000 to watch movies with their friends, virtually! To give people more time to submit their applications, US Dish has extended the deadline for applying to February 26th, 2021.

Here are the main ‘Job Requirements‘:

What: US Dish is looking to pay someone $2,000 to host a virtual rom-com watch party for their best pals!

Why:  They believe that spending time with the people we love is important. It’s been a difficult year to get together with friends and tell them just how much they’re appreciated, so they are offering this stress-free dream job — because who wouldn’t want to get paid for (virtually) hanging out with their friends?

How: The winner will complete the job from the comfort of their own home, in their PJs, or all decked out — who cares?

The Must-Dos: The winner will have to watch three (3) movies with their best friends, and then complete a task sheet.

The Optional Dos: Decorate, get matching jammies, hang some balloons — this is your party and the options are endless. If you’re lazy and plan on turning off the lights so your friends don’t see the mess around you, that’s cool, too!

The Perks:  US Dish will dish out $2,000 to the winner of the Dream Job, and they’ll also pay for all streaming access, and a video conferencing tool. You’ll also receive a Swag Bag (worth over $200) full of heart-shaped candies, snacks, a warm blanket, empowerment books, and more. But wait, there’s more: the host and their friends will be provided with a delivery dining credit as well! Mangia!

Interested candidates can easily apply online at This Link! Applications are open now through February 26th, 12:00 Noon Mountain Time! Good Luck!

October is here already — wow! — and this pandemic is still a thing that we have to make allowances for in our daily lives. The safety of ourselves and our families is a consideration for any type of activity planning, and Halloween is fast approaching. We need to keep kids safe, but their social and emotional wellness can also be affected by being unable able to participate in festivities that create so much happiness and sense of connection. How can we celebrate Halloween in the Covid life, you may ask?  While door-to-do trick or treating may be off the table, we have a few suggestions for keeping the Halloween spirit alive. Parenting expert, guidance counselor, licensed educational psychologist, and board-certified behavior analyst, Reena B. I know that October has already started, but it’s not too late to make a countdown calendar (even if you just do it for the ten days or a week heading up to Halloween) and for each day have a Halloween surprise ready to share with your child. These can include things like a Halloween coloring sheet, candy, puzzles, pencils, stickers, and small toys that you can find at your local Dollar Store. You’d be surprised how far little things like this will go toward raising a child’s spirits especially now.

Yes, It Exists: Divine Fashion Dolls

Divine Dolls Gold Outfit
All Photos By Gail

The Goldberg Company (those responsible for the original 1978 Dolly Parton doll) fashioned an impressive set of four Divine character dolls in 1984. While the full line was on shelves in time for Christmas, most never made it under the tree. Most units were left unsold, even after being discounted as much as 90%. Goldberg was banking on Divine’s disco career creating the necessary interest to sustain the line, but it was an appeal that did not translate in the toy department.

Divine Dolls Full Set

It appeared that American girls under 12 were not ready for this kind of Barbie, which is unfortunate given Goldberg’s future plans to add six more figures to the line.

Upcoming fictionalized Divine characters included Astronaut Divine, Party Girl Divine, Divine as Shirley Temple, President Divine, Waitress Divine (Dawn Davenport) and Surf’s Up Divine.

Who Will Win an Oscar On March 2nd? Our Predictions Are In!

Best Picture Oscar Collage

It’s no secret that I couldn’t care less about most awards shows – the Grammy’s being a prime example of a formerly held-sacred-by-me tradition that long ago became all about rewarding commercial success over acknowledging artistic merit. But being a huge movie fan, film awards like The Independent Spirit Awards, The Golden Globes and, coming up on March 2nd, The Oscars (whose list of nominees can be found at This Link) are the nights of ceremonial award giving that I shamelessly indulge in. Because to me, those awards are still more about the art than the box office returns.

Over the Christmas holidays, I had the chance to get caught up on a handful of the films that would become contenders for the major category awards of 2014 including American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street, Dallas Buyers Club, Her (which I didn’t care for) and indie favorites like Inside Llewyn Davis, which got a little Golden Globe love but was virtually ignored by the Academy, despite being excellent on every level.

Wolf of Wall Street Dollar

If you’re passionate about film, it’s fun to predict who might win the Oscars in various categories – and for those inclined to wager a little cash on the outcomes, or who simply want water cooler bragging rights the day after, Sports Betting Dime has their odds posted right now (by the way, if fractional odds confound you, whichever film has the lowest number – less than a value of 1 being ideal – is the favorite to win). Two of the Best Picture NomineesGravity and 12 Years a Slave – I’ve yet to see. But there is still time! Here are a few of my personal favorites and some of my own predictions.

My favorite film of those nominated is American Hustle. The script and direction are excellent, the cast perfect, with top notch acting by all five major characters, and I also really love its Soundtrack. American Hustle won the Golden Globe for Best Comedy, while 12 Years a Slave took the Globe for Best Drama. Since with Oscars there is no categorical subdivision, I predict American Hustle will lose the Best Picture category to 12 Years a Slave.

When I saw Dallas Buyer’s Club, I couldn’t imagine that any other actor would deserve the Best Actor Oscar more than Matthew McConaughey, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama. Chiwetel Ejiofor is McConaughey‘s stiffest Oscar competition for his starring role in 12 Years a Slave. It could really go either way on this, but Sports Betting Dime slightly favors McConaughey in what is a pretty close race.

As with the Golden Globes, McConaughey’s Dallas Buyer’s Club co-star, Jared Leto, is a favorite (and my favorite) to win his first Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as a transgendered AIDS victim. He was just amazing.

Cate Blanchett completely owned Blue Jasmine and no one else in the Best Actress Category even comes close. Not even Meryl Streep. Cate FTW!

Best Supporting Actress is either going to Lupita Nyongo for 12 Years a Slave or Jennifer Lawrence (who won the Golden Globe) for American Hustle.

The Best Director award could go to anybody, with the exception of Alexander Payne for Nebraska, a film that only the critics and the people involved with the film seem to like. My choice would be David O. Russell for American Hustle, but if it went to, say, Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) or Martin Scorsese (The Wolf of Wall Street) I wouldn’t say they didn’t deserve it. Gravity is supposed to be an epic film but if Alfonso Cuaron wins for directing it my head will explode.

And last but not least, if I gave out the awards, Best Picture would go to American Hustle, but I am pretty sure 12 Years a Slave is going to get it, because slavery was way worse than ABSCAM.

Who do you like to win in each category? Feel free to leave your picks in the comments below, and I’ll see you in front of the TV on March 2nd, 2014!
