The School of Visual Arts is reaching for the stars with an inspiring new collaboration between its BFA Illustration and BFA Design students and NASA. The result? A stunning poster exhibition celebrating next spring’s highly anticipated Artemis II mission, which will send four astronauts on a journey around the Moon and pave the way for future human exploration of Mars.

Titled Earthrise — a nod to astronaut Bill Anders’ iconic 1968 photograph capturing Earth rising over the Moon’s horizon — the show features two dozen works that channel a sense of adventure, innovation, and wonder. Students explored the mission’s themes through diverse techniques including drawing, digital illustration, and graphic design, resulting in works that range from whimsical to profound, colorful to stark.

Selections for the exhibition were made by a panel that included representatives from NASA, SVA faculty, design legend and MPS Branding Chair Debbie Millman (herself a past NASA collaborator), and even an astronaut. The final collection reflects not only the excitement of space exploration but also a shared curiosity about what lies beyond our planet.

In some ways, Earthrise recalls the viral mock New Yorker covers created by SVA students during the pandemic — playful, imaginative, and deeply relevant. Here, though, the stakes feel bigger: while the Artemis II mission itself will orbit the Moon, its promise of a long-term human presence on the lunar surface, and eventual Mars exploration, infuses the artwork with a forward-looking optimism. Some posters look like they could be pulled from a vintage travel ad, others evoke storybook charm, and a few could easily be scenes from a sci-fi epic.
