Fishing is an important and enduring practice in Hawaiian people‘s food systems, though shifting factors have forced Hawaiians to supplement to traditional fishing methods with larger-scale commercial efforts. In Fishhook from Hawaii – No. 1 (1939 ) Georgia O’Keefe depicts a fish hook (Makau) – which symbolize this prosperity and connection between humans and water – adorned with the vibrant feathers of local birds.

Fishing Lure Mail Box
Oh the cleverness. While relaxing at friend’s beach house over the long Labor Day weekend, I spotted this Fishing Lure-shaped Mail Box out front of Haskell’s Outpost Bait and Tackle Shop (they appear to need Instagram followers!) in Westhampton Beach, LI, NY. It’s pretty cool!
Very Large Fish Lure on Water Street
I’ve posted many photos and stories behind the fantastic public art that can be found in the Financial District, and here’s another piece I just discovered thanks to a tip on Instagram (thanks @fidi_living). Public spaces built by the Kaufman Organization are known for their quirky objects and splashes of color, and the plaza and arcade space at 200 Water Street, adjacent to Fulton Street to the northeast, is no exception.
