There might not be a more ingeniously clever way for a new band to get their song noticed than to name that song after one of the arguably best/most popular bands on the planet right now. Of course, I’m talking about Tame Impala (AKA Tim & Paula). Being all awash in fuzz guitars and psychedelic feedback, the Sunflower Bean tune “Tame Impala” serves as an emphatic homage to Kevin Parker’s Australian hypno-groove project, whether or not it actually has anything to do with that band. Like I’m saying, what a great marketing ploy!

Video Clip of The Week: The Black Angels, “The Flop”
Choosing “The Flop” from Austin’s The Black Angels for today’s Video Clip of the Week was a no brainer, to say the least. The awesome clip, which meshes a live performance of the song with hypnotizing graphics, reminds me of an obscure tune from an under-loved 60s band that’s been used to great effect as the soundtrack for the drug / orgy scene from a Mario Bava film. If you know what I’m talking about, great; if not, it doesn’t matter.
“The Flop” comes from The Black Angel’s latest 7-track offering, Clear Lake Forest (on Blue Horizon) which enjoyed a limited vinyl release on Record Store Day, but is now available in a variety of formats, including 12″ clear vinyl, CD and digitally. Visit the band’s webstore at This Link. Enjoy!

On Saturday night, Geoffrey and I made an unplanned pit stop into the Judith Charles Gallery, having been attracted in from the sidewalk, to view an eye catching exhibit from San Diego based artist Kelsey Brookes. Entitled Better Living Through Chemistry, this show features a large body of work and is Brookes‘ first solo exhibition in New York.

Must See Art: Yayoi Kusama’s I Who Have Arrived In Heaven At David Zwirner

According to gallery employees at David Zwirner, last Friday night’s opening of Yayoi Kusama’s I Who Have Arrived in Heaven wasn’t just a Reception: it was an Event, complete with a personal appearance by the 84-year old living legend. And yes, she reportedly wore the bright red wig! We are very sorry to have missed that, but we did make it to the much less crowded Zwirner gallery on Saturday to take in I Who Have Arrived in Heaven‘s sculptures, paintings, video installation and one of two mirrored rooms that made our heads explode. The comprehensive exhibit fills all three of Zwirner’s adjoining spaces on West 19th Street, where a feast for the eyes awaits you in every room. It is high-fives all around for Zwirner on their inaugural Kusama exhibit, and if this marks your first exposure to this artist’s heavily psychedelic creations, you are in for a huge treat.
