On This Date In 1973: Pink Floyd released their eighth studio album, The Dark Side Of The Moon in the US. It remained in the US charts for 741 discontinuous weeks from 1973 to 1988, longer than any other album in history. After moving to the Billboard Top Pop Catalog Chart, the album notched up a further 759 weeks, and had reached a total of over 1,500 weeks on the combined charts by May 2006.

On This Date, March 3rd in 1986: Metallica released its highly influential third album, Master of Puppets, considered by many in the metal community to be the best metal album of all time. This was the final Metallica album with original bassist Cliff Burton, who was killed when the group’s tour bus over-turned in southern Sweden while touring to promote the album.
On this Date in 1984: The Smiths released their self-titled debut album. The album – which features a cropped shot of actor Joe Dallesandro on its cover – reached as high as Number 2 on the UK album charts, where it stayed for 33 weeks. This record is amazing and it’s still one of my favorite albums of all time. The Smiths rule.
On This Date, February 18th in 1974: Kiss released its self-titled debut album on Casablanca Records. The album eventually peaked at number 87 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Five songs from the album — including “Cold Gin”, “Strutter” and “Deuce” — remain permanent staples in Kiss’ live set to this day.
On This Date In 1971: The band called Alice Cooper released their third album, Love It to Death, containing the single “I’m Eighteen.” Their first album produced by Bob Ezrin, Love It to Death went on to become the band’s commercial breakthrough, reaching number 35 on the Billboard 200 album chart and selling one million copies in the US.
