Video Clip of The Week: The Damned, “Standing On The Edge Of Tomorrow”

Ah, The Damned: a band that has managed to stay fresh and vital through subtle sonic reinvention for four decades now — wow! Punk Rock pioneers whose strong pop sensibilities and solid musicianship have allowed them to transcend the trends, they are making their debut appearance as the Video Clip of The Week with their new single, the anthemic “Standing On The Edge Of Tomorrow” — and what an honor that is. Visually, “Standing On The Edge Of Tomorrow” is a Bladerunner-esque adventure that’s their most ambitious video to date. Vocalist and charismatic frontman Dave Vanian, who also directed the clip, has this to say about the song’s message:

“This is a cry for [us] to recognize our humanity, before it’s too late. There is a strong influence of (songwriter/ producer) Joe Meek here: “Telstar” was a glorious song about the opportunities of the future. I’d like to think that ‘“Standing On The Edge Of Tomorrow” reflects a similar sentiment.”

Vanian adds: “The exploration and colonization of other worlds is something we will face in the not so distant future. My fervent hope is that we do not take our fears and prejudices with us and repeat the mistakes we have made on our home planet.”

“Standing On The Edge Of Tomorrow” can be found on The Damned’s first new album in a decade, Evil Spirits, due out via Search And Destroy / Spinefarm Records on April 13th, 2018. Evil Spirits was produced by the legendary Tony Visconti and recored in just nine days — punk rock! Enjoy!

Video Clip of the Week: Killing Joke, “I Am The Virus”

When it comes to making dangerous music that reliably brings the Sturm Und Drang while also maintaining a tenuous grip on melodic pop sensibilities, nobody beats Post Punk/Industrial legends, Killing Joke. While we are not super fond of the current phenomenon known as the Lyric Video, when you have a chance to post new a Killing Joke video, you put your personal preferences slightly off to the side, just as we have long since forgiven Jaz Coleman for allowing one of his band’s most menacing anthems to be used as the theme music for a Short-lived TV Sitcom. Yes, it happened.

I don’t know what to say about “I Am The Virus” except that it provides solid evidence that Killing Joke refuse to compromise on their sound, ever. There is no rap/metal Killing Joke and there is no EDM Killing Joke; there is only hard, fierce aural terror that comes from guys who also know how to play their instruments. What other band that’s been around for over 3o years can you even say that about? I ask yez.

“I Am The Virus” comes from the group’s sixteenth studio album, Pylon, releasing October 23rd, 2015 via Spinefarm Records. Enjoy, bitches.

Video Clip of the Week: Michael Monroe, “Old King’s Road”

Joan Jett isn’t the only one who loves Rock & Roll, bitches. Former Hanoi Rocks front man and, let’s face it, Glam Rock Legend, Michael Monroe seems to be fond of it as well. And who could blame him. While Monroe should have been as big of a household name as, say Steven Tyler, it didn’t quite work out that way. But Michael Monroe has always played the hand he was dealt. Looking back in anger is for pussies.

Everything about “Old King’s Road” — aurally and visually — is amazing, but I admit that the ultimate deal clincher in choosing it as this week’s Clip was the fact that I recognized a FaceBook friend in the video, because he is one of Michael’s guitarists. There are no accidents. “Old King’s Road” pays tribute to the famous shopping street in London, where the first wave of British Punk Rock was basically born at the tail end of the ’70s. It makes sense then that everyone in the video is dressed to the nines of Rock & Roll fashion. Because if you are a Rock Star, you need to dress like one. Digging a bit deeper, the lyrics make a series of a vague references to Monroe’s early career in Hanoi Rocks, when the band all lived in London in the early ’80s. Good times, bad times; you know he’s had his share.

As a high-energy tune that rocks hard enough to crack a skull, “Old Kings Road” blends the ferocity of punk with the keen melodic sensibilities of classic power pop bands like The Flamin’ Groovies and The Records. The combination of the two musical forces coming together is irresistible.

Michael’s relentlessly ass-kicking band features the dual guitar assault of Rich Jones (ex Black Halos, a Vancouver-based garage rock band that will forever be near and dear to my heart) and Steve Conte (New York Dolls), plus fellow Hanoi Rocks bassist Sami Yaffa, and Swedish Drumming Juggernaut Karl Rockfist, who has played with just everyone, it seems.

“Old King’s Road” is a tasty rock morsel from Monroe’s forthcoming record, Blackout States, available starting October 9th, 2015 via Spinefarm Records. Enjoy!

Video Clip of the Week: Turbowolf, “Nine Lives”

Caution: Heavy Rock Action Ahead! While I was initially drawn in by this video’s surreal, cut out animation, which reminds me so much of the mind blowing collage art of Fred Tomaselli, it’s the song’s relentless aural ass-kicking that keeps me clicking on the repeat button. With a solid ’70s vibe that cannot be denied, “Nine Lives” from British Rock Powerhouse Turbowolf also adheres to what I’d call “Classic Contemporary” Rock influences to sound something like Monster Magnet meets the original band called Alice Cooper with a T Rex chaser. Eeeexcellent.

According to vocalist Chris Georgiadis.”‘Nine Lives’ is a song about making the most of our limited time; about living with no regrets; about changing our attitudes towards death and about life. It’s a celebration of the known, unknown and everything in between.” The band’s new album, Two Hands, is out on April 6th, 2015 on Spinefarm Records. Like them on the FaceBook at This Link. Enjoy!
