Hey east coast, how about that snow storm yesterday? That was lots of fun, right? I spent the day posting photos of the blizzard on the FaceBook and gleaning my in-box for bitchen new music videos to share with you. Here’s what I found: it’s the appropriately entitled “Euphoria” — another new video from Killing Joke’s latest album, Pylon, which was released this past October. Both the song and the video are pretty fucking excellent.
Much of what was said about the group’s video for “I Am The Virus” — which made an appearance in this very space back in September 2015, also applies here. The goruso sound as menacing and melodic as they did way back in 1978, or whenever it was that they released “Requiem” as a single, and I lost my teenage mind over its greatness. And Jaz Coleman is still completely fucking insane. You either love Killing Joke or you don’t. I can’t make you have good taste. Enjoy!
When it comes to making dangerous music that reliably brings the Sturm Und Drang while also maintaining a tenuous grip on melodic pop sensibilities, nobody beats Post Punk/Industrial legends, Killing Joke. While we are not super fond of the current phenomenon known as the Lyric Video, when you have a chance to post new a Killing Joke video, you put your personal preferences slightly off to the side, just as we have long since forgiven Jaz Coleman for allowing one of his band’s most menacing anthems to be used as the theme music for a Short-lived TV Sitcom. Yes, it happened.
I don’t know what to say about “I Am The Virus” except that it provides solid evidence that Killing Joke refuse to compromise on their sound, ever. There is no rap/metal Killing Joke and there is no EDM Killing Joke; there is only hard, fierce aural terror that comes from guys who also know how to play their instruments. What other band that’s been around for over 3o years can you even say that about? I ask yez.

Hello and welcome to the first entry in a full year of Worleygig.com’s Video Clip of the Week. It’s good to be back! This week we have a hard-to-top clip from Leeds UK-based Eagulls for the amazing song, “Tough Luck” — which I am am already in love with. Visually, we have live performance footage of the band diffused with a mix of black and white animation that includes images of biological cell division! Intriguing! Full of chiming guitars, driving drums and completely unintelligible lyrical delivery, “Tough Luck” manages to be both dark and exhilarating at the same time; not unlike Killing Joke crossed with Echo and The Bunnymen (comparisons to The Cure and Joy Division have been made elsewhere, so I know I’m not offtrack with that observation. Certainly, The Cure’s “Jumping Someone Else’s Train” springs immediately to mind). Without giving away the “surprise,” Eagulls‘ frontman, George Mitchell reveals that the song portrays “the gamble of trusting in something without knowing the true consequences.” This band is fucking awesome. Eagull’s self-titled debut album is due for release on March 4th, 2014 via Partisan Records, so watch out for that. In the meantime, Enjoy!
Well now. There isn’t much I don’t love about this simultaneously frightening and compelling, and all-together intriguingly atmospheric video for “The Holy Ghost” from Destruction Unit. I mean, you’ve got your deep and apparent influences from the likes heavy aural gloom masters Killing Joke and Bauhaus (check and check) and the drummer — who, by the way, is a total badass on the kit — gets serious bonus points for wearing a Brian Jonestown Massacre T-Shirt. I love this band! “Holy Ghost” is the brand new single from Destruction Unit’s latest CD, Deep Trip, on Sacred Bones Records. The band is currently on tour in Europe. Enjoy!
For this weeks’ Video Clip, we have an amazing discovery with The Garden, a garage rock duo with both punk and goth leanings made up of 19-year-old identical twin hotties Wyatt and Fletcher Shears. You know that I am way past the stage where I am swayed by a pretty face, but these guys have so much more going for them than the model-quality good looks that won them an Yves Saint Laurent ad campaign with zero effort on their part. Most importantly, their music does not suck! With just bass (Wyatt) and drums (Fletcher), they manage to conjure the dark recesses of Bauhaus Meets Iggy Pop, and who could find fault with that? Answer: no one.
These guys have quite a musical pedigree as well, being the spawn of OC Punk royalty, namely Steven Shears, drummer for long-running group Shattered Faith, an Orange County fixture since 1978! Punk Rock! Schooled on the aggressive sounds of bands like Saccharine Trust, The Minutemen and Killing Joke, The Garden still remember to “Do the Song,” as I like to say.

October 20, 2007 FRANCE – Ministry’s bassist Paul Raven was found dead today in a private home in a small French village on the Swiss border. Initial reports indicate Raven’s passing was due to a heart attack. Raven (known also for his work with Killing Joke, Prong) was in Geneva working with French recording artists Treponem Pal on their new release, with Marco Neves, Ted Parsons (Prong) and members of The Young Gods.
Born in Wolverhampton UK on January 16, 1961, Paul Vincent Raven established himself with his work in the seminal post-punk/industrial group Killing Joke when, in 1982 he replaced the original bassist for the band, recording and touring with the group throughout its most commercially successful period, performing on Fire Dances, Night Time and Brighter than a Thousand Suns. Throughout his extensive career, Raven participated in other collaborations including Prong, Murder, Inc., Pigface, Godflesh.
Most recently, Raven was nominated for a 2006 Grammy for Best Metal Performance for his work with Ministry’s Al Jourgensen, with whom he had begun working with in late 2005 on the 13th Planet release Rio Grande Blood. After a 2006 World Tour with Ministry, Raven helped Jourgensen and Prong’s Tommy Victor pen the September 18, 2006 Ministry release The Last Sucker, Ministry’s final studio release.
States Jourgensen: “I am in total shock. The world of music is a sadder, emptier place. Not only was Raven an extraordinary talent, but one of my closest dearest friends. Our condolences and prayers go to his immediate family. He will be truly missed by artists, musicians and his fans the world over.
The one consolation is knowing Raven’s already hooked up with the right people and started a new project in the After Life. God’s speed, Raven. Rest In Peace, you fucking pirate.”
Raven’s newest project, Mob Research, featuring members of Warrior Soul and The Mission UK, and schedule for release on 13th Planet Records in 2008, was in the final mixing and mastering phases at the time of Raven’s sudden and unexpected passing.
