La Luz de Jesus Gallery to Host Dee Dee Ramone Art Show

LA-based Ramones fans and art lovers won’t want miss the chance to check out The Art of Dee Dee Ramone: A Birthday Memorial Show taking place from September 18 – 26th at La Luz De Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles. The opening reception is scheduled for what would have been Dee Dee’s 59th Birthday, Saturday September 18th, from 8:00 until 11:00 PM. I’m sure it will be quite a scene-making opportunity.

Dee Dee Ramone will forever be an enigmatic punk rock icon. While most are familiar with his musical legacy as a founding member and songwriter in the world famous Ramones, many are less aware of his talent for art and painting. La Luz de Jesus Gallery has assembled an exhibition of over thirty original pieces, many of which will be displayed for the very first time at this extraordinary event sanctioned by Dee Dee’s Estate to honor the rock legend. Also debuting at the show is a special Limited Edition commemorative archival lithograph featuring one of Dee Dee’s quintessential self-portraits “Dee Dee Ramone: The Blue Dragon,” as seen above. Somebody in LA who reads this blog,  please go and email me a report!

The Art of Dee Dee Ramone runs until September 26th at La Luz de Jesus Gallery, 4633 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles CA 90027.

Justin Lowe, an artist known for transforming white-cube interiors into cluttered labyrinths, has recreated the graffiti-covered restroom of the defunct CBGB punk rock club within the stately galleries of Hartford’s Wadsworth Atheneum. Lowe’s installation, which runs through September 5, 2010 takes over four of the museum’s galleries and features walls papered in Day-Glo collages involving movie stars, vintage book covers and illustrations of insects.

Rock Rock Rock Rock Rock ‘N’ Roll High School

On This Date in 1979: The movie Rock ‘N’ Roll High School, starring The Ramones along with PJ Soles, Vincent Van Patten , Mary Woronov and Paul Bartel premiered in Los Angeles. Rock ‘N’ Roll High School, which is one of my favorite rock movie musicals ever, is a part of Shout Factory‘s Roger Corman Cult Classics series, being reissued on DVD in May 2010. Yay!

July 15th Birthdays in The World Of Rock

Marky Ramone

Ramones’ Drummer Marky Ramone (born Marc Bell) was born on this day, July 15th, in 1956. Coincidentally, Ian Curtis of Joy Division was also born on this date in 1956. Curtis passed away quite tragically on May 18, 1980, having committed suicide by hanging himself. Johnny Thunders (born John Genzale) of The New York Dolls and The Heartbreakers was born on this date in 1952. He died of a drug overdose (though some say it was murder) on April 23, 1991. It’s always sad to lose someone so charismatic and talented in their prime. Let us all take a few minutes (at least) today to celebrate the lives and music of these three influential musicians!

Living Things To Play The Ramones In Runaways Movie

Living Things

New York, NY, July 11
– St. Louis garage rockers Living Things are about to appear as one of their hero bands, The Ramones in the now-filming The Runaways, the biopic about the groundbreaking 70’s all-girl hard rock group led by Joan Jett. Kristen Stewart of Twilight fame plays Jett, with Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie and Academy Award-nominated actor Michael Shannon as the band’s “Svengali” Kim Fowley (excellent call).
