It was a dark and stormy afternoon when I first spotted this unique piece of sculpture bolted to a street sign on East 13th Street (near Ave A). I went in for a closer look:
The sculpture consists of a spray-painted-blue wingtip /loafer shoe containing an assortment of sea creatures, held in place by lucite, to compose a miniature ocean diorama. Very lovely!
According to the artist’s Instagram (@billy.barnacles) this piece, which he refers to as Ocean Shoe, went up on or around September 19, 2020. As of June 25th, 2021, it has been replaced with a new work, which you will see on the blog in a week or so. Stay tuned!
