Salon Art + Design — which made a triumphant return to the Park Avenue Armory from November 11th through 15th after being waylaid in 2020 by Covid — always flaunts more than its fair share of ‘Oh Wow!’ moments, but this stunning Wedge sofa and ottoman from Todd Merrill Studio was far and away one of my favorites this time around. Because just look at it. It’s insane, right?
But what else would you expect from Todd Merrill, who grew up immersed in the antiques trade, representing the third generation of his family in the business. Though his family’s collecting passion was for eighteenth and nineteenth-century American furniture, at the start of his career, Merrill shifted his focus to the post-war era of American design, which allowed designers to create outstanding decorative furnishings unlike anything seen before. One of the first gallerists to realize the significance of this formerly overlooked period of design, Merrill dramatically increased its popularity.
Merrill’s signature creations reflect his vast experience with twentieth-century design and knowledge of contemporary tastes. The Wedge Ottoman provides extended seating options in the form of customizable pie-shaped sections for a variety of arrangements. Each quadrant can be custom made to size specifications with the ability to accommodate both stationary and movable options.
The individual pieces of the sofa and ottoman are crafted at some of New York’s finest workshops and Merrill personally oversees production. The frames are made of solid hardwood and steel. A standard base is rendered in polished chromed steel but can be customized in brass, bronze, lacquer, or wood. A variety of fabrics and colors are possible. All orders are COM (Customer’s Own Material). Dimensions, finish, gilding, metal plating, casters, and hardware may be altered to fit your needs. Todd Merrill Studio will do everything they can to accommodate a custom order. And just look at the result!
