Salon Art + Design — which made a triumphant return to the Park Avenue Armory from November 11th through 15th after being waylaid in 2020 by Covid — always flaunts more than its fair share of ‘Oh Wow!’ moments, but this stunning Wedge sofa and ottoman from Todd Merrill Studio was far and away one of my favorites this time around. Because just look at it. It’s insane, right?

A dramatic evocation of a downpour at nightfall, a convergence of nature and the urban world, New York Night is an installation of 120 hand-blown crystal pendants majestically cascades 90 feet through a six-story staircase, engaging the viewer in an ever-changing pattern of expansion and compression, much like the rhythm of a rain storm itself.

Set against the backdrop of polished charcoal venetian plaster, which amplifies each drops amber glow, the composition renders mirrored pools of street light and captures the cities landscape in reflection. Continue reading Eye On Design: New York Night Lighting Installation By Alison Berger

Pink Thing of The Day: Pink Lacquer Storage Boxes

The multi-story behemoth that is Restoration Hardware’s Meatpacking district flagship store is very much like a museum of home design retail. You could spend a week in that place. The abundance of fully-furnished display rooms also makes it a great place to find Pink Things. Case in point: these Paris Pink Lacquered Storage Boxes, which I covet wildly.

These hand-poured and polished lacquer wood boxes — each layer individually hand polished to create a deep, rich finish impervious to heat and alcohol — feature a a velvet-lined interior, which makes them ideal for keeping your jewelry safe and pampered.  Made in the United States by Pacific Connections, they are available in a range of sizes and can be purchased online Here.

The American film actress Jayne Mansfield, one of the leading blonde sex symbols of the 50s and 60s, starred in several popular Hollywood movies that emphasized her platinum-blonde hair, hourglass figure and cleavage-revealing costumes. Although her film career was short-lived, Jayne had several box-office successes and won one of two golden globe awards nominations for the The Girl Can’t Help It.

Eye On Design: Popworm Bookshelf By Ron Arad

The creativity of artist/designer Ron Arad combined with the technological expertise of design company Kartell results in a bookcase design of industrial scale that can rightfully be considered the world’s most daring and revolutionary: behold the Popworm Bookshelf (2015), the flexible bookshelf. A careful analysis of extrusion technology has allowed the creation of a curvy bookcase which assumes any desired shape, without compromising toughness and functionality. The shapes that can be formed are limited only by personal creativity. Available in three different lengths, Popworm is marked by a series of bookend supports. The shelf combines flexibility and superior durability, allowing for a load of approximately 22 lbs for each support. It is advisable to wall-mount the shelf in a curved shape to keep the materials in tension and to increase resistance once loaded. Popworm is available in three sizes (with 7, 11, or 17 bookends) and in three colors, Pink (shown), Light Blue, and Yellow. Visit Kartell’s Website for pricing.

A few weeks into Manhattan’s Covid lockdown it became clear that I would be working from home for the long haul, so I created a small budget to upgrade my home office with a few new items. A new task chair, a small colorful rug, and a set of strategically-measured storage cubes helped to create a pleasant and comfortable workplace within my apartment, while optimizing the functionality in the 50-square foot room. Now that our homes are often serving as offices, and even classrooms, you might also be looking for design ideas for the way we live right now. With that in mind, Modsy, an online interior design platform, has just released its 2021 Trend Report, which is brimming with quarantine-inspired interior design trends, emerging style predictions for next year, product sales comparison insights, and survey data from thousands of people across the U.S.
