Vivienne Tam has often explored her Chinese heritage through fashion. Her spring 1995 collection, made with artist Zhang Hongtu, featured satirical images of Mao Zedong, formal chairman of the Communist Party of China.
The collection, though loved by many, sparked controversy for its playful mockery of a ruthless leader.
Photographed as part of the exhibit, Reinvention and Restlessness: Fashion in the Nineties on view though April 17th, 2022 at the Museum at FIT in New York City.
