Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument 2.0

Prison Ship Martyrs' Monument 2.0

Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument 2.0 (2015) was a guerilla action intended to refocus the national conversation on civil liberties and privacy two years after Edward Snowden’s highly politicized leaking of classified National Security Administration documents. In an act of solidarity with Snowden, artists Jeff Greenspan and Andrew Tider covertly installed this nameplate and hundred-pound bust (sculpted by Doyle Trankina) of the controversial figure at the Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park. Drawing on the significance of the monument as a memorial to more than 11,500 prisoners of war who died during the American Revolution, the work valorizes Snowden as a patriot among patriots.

Though the sculpture was removed within hours by police, its documentation circulated widely, and by the next evening the artists collective The Illuminator had replaced the bust with a projection in light.

ANARCHIST: Israeli Drone Video Signal, 2016, by Laura Poitras (All Photos By Gail)

Laura Poitras wants you to know that you are under surveillance at all times. At all times. The artist, journalist and documentary filmmaker, who won the 2015 Best Documentary Feature Academy Award for Citizenfour, the story of Edward Snowden and the NSA Spying Scandal, has her first solo museum show opening at the Whitney Museum on Friday, February 5th, and it is an immersive, installation-based exhibit unlike anything I’ve seen previously. The show’s title, Astro Noise, refers to the faint background disturbance of thermal radiation left over from the Big Bang, which is also the name that Edward Snowden gave to an encrypted file containing evidence of mass surveillance by the NSA that he shared with Poitras in 2013.

Mike Weiss Gallery Presents: Marc Séguin I Love America and America Loves Me

Self Portrait
“Elvis is King.” Self Portrait by Marc Séguin. (All Photos By Gail)

One of our favorite venues for contemporary art, Mike Weiss Gallery, is currently featuring new works by painter Marc Séguin in an exhibit entitled I Love America and America Loves Me. Séguin’s mostly large scale canvases examine and poke fun at viral media phenomena and celebrity culture that Americans seem to be obsessed with. It isn’t always pretty, but it is always provocative. Here are a few of our favorite pieces from the show!

Séguin sure didn’t waste any time portraying 80 year old convicted murderer Charles Manson with his fiance /new wife Afton “Star” Burton, who is 25. Séguin‘s painting is based on a photograph of the happy couple found at This Link.

What’s interesting to note about this portrait of Edward Snowden is that, when I looked at it along with an artist friend who came to the show with me, we both knew what he was famous for (leaking NSA secrets) but neither of us could remember his name, despite the fact that he was all over the media for most of last and the previous year.

This one is called Fuck Sharks. I love it.
