Top Social Media Review: Why Women Are The Real Power Behind Their Success

Video Clip of The Week: Psychic Teens, “Less”

Do you think these guys are fans of Nick Cave? I sure do. There is not much not to love about Psychic Teens dark and lovely tune, “Less” — which is like a greatest hits collection of all of your favorite College Radio-Friendly ’80s band including the aforementioned Mr. Cave. I definitely hear The Misfits, The Cramps and Echo and the Bunnymen, all partying together on top of a bass line borrowed the The Cure’s “A Forrest,” a euphoric wash of minor chord, cascading guitars and…those awesome, growly vocals. Surely the number of nods and winks in this song would leave even the casual listener’s head spinning, but when you’re feeling it, who gives a shit?

Video Clip of The Week: Owenstone’s “Days Like Smoke”

I’ll tell you what: It’s about his voice. If you can remember back to the days when the radio airwaves were dominated by solid Adult Contemporary Rock that actually rocked and was never easily mistaken for the soundtrack to a commercial for auto insurance, then you’ll probably dig Owenstone. Fronted by remarkably gifted (and, also, hot) vocalist Nathan Owen, this LA-based quintet avoid being pigeonholed by jumping on any current sub-genre bandwagon and just deliver an adhesively melodic song with an accessible message, repeat play appeal and hooks for days. As a wise man once said, they let the Music do the talking. Orchestral touches lift the arrangement but don’t get in the way of the beat. Well done!

We are also fairly crazy about the propulsive and slightly menacing “This Face,” the video for which you can groove on at This Link. Visit Ownestone’s FaceBook page Here. Enjoy!

In the mid-1990s, when music was an entirely different animal than it is now, there was a fantastic NYC-based power pop quartet, possessed of a wickedly gritty edge, called Thin Lizard Dawn. Thin Lizard Dawn were just about my favorite band in the world for the short time they were together. TLD sounded something like The Beatles meets 10 CC and their self-titled, 1995 debut featured energetic, danceable songs about smoking pot (“Weed”), enthusiastic sex (“Sexual Dynamo”) and how much they thought Oasis sucked (“Sucks). That’s right: they were amazing.
