Looking for something suitably spooky,  The Welcoming Committee (1986) by Chicano artist Alfredo de Batuc makes quite an impression.  Against a blazing red sky, two menacing black cats bare their fangs from atop dark, rocky outcroppings. Between them, a tall, glowing silhouette of Los Angeles City Hall rises in the distance, creating an eerie focal point in the otherwise ominous landscape. The cats’ exaggerated features and sharply pointed ears give them an almost supernatural presence, while the intense red-and-black palette heightens the drama.

De Batuc is known for his bold compositions and striking use of color, often incorporating recognizable Los Angeles landmarks into his work. Here, the familiar cityscape takes on an otherworldly quality, as though the viewer has arrived at the gates of a strange and foreboding realm. The title adds another layer of intrigue: just who, or what, is waiting to greet us?

With its theatrical imagery and sinister atmosphere, The Welcoming Committee is a memorable Halloween-season discovery — and a reminder that contemporary Chicano art can be as playful, mysterious and visually arresting as it is thought-provoking.
