I was walking downtown on the High Line when I just happened to notice this cool new mural, entitled Tolerance, from renowned Brazilian street artist Eduardo Kobra, done in his signature, harlequin-pattern, Technicolor style. Painted on the side of the Chelsea Square Market at the corner of 18th Street and Tenth Avenue, the three-story image features the profiles of Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi, facing each other in a tribute to their roles as two of the world’s greatest humanitarians.

File this one under “Must See Art” because you won’t want to miss Michael Leavitt’s latest exhibit at Jonathan Levine Gallery, entitled Empire Peaks. Continuing with the theme he did to perfection with Art Army Royalty back in 2011, Leavitt’s latest collection of what could loosely be called pop culture action figures takes a Star Wars theme and turns that wildly popular franchise’s characters into recognizable icons of history, politics and entertainment. The show is totally off the hook! Even if you’re not a total Star Wars geek (raises hand) you’re going to enjoy the high-quality representations of some very recognizable individuals, both real and fictional.

Usually, when The ‘Gig gives a shout out to a birthday boy or girl, we try to lump all birthdays happening on the same day together in one post, to save space or whatever. But for reasons which should be obvious, we could not really lump Paramahansa Yogananda (Born January 5th, 1893) – author of Autobiography of a Yogi, founder of Self-Realization Fellowship, and the guy who taught Gandhi how to meditate – in with Marilyn Manson, Antichrist Superstar (Born January 5th, 1969). Because, no. Happy birthday, Paramahansaji!

I’ve been sitting in my office on Wall Street – which is about four blocks from the former site of the World Trade Center – since before 8:00 AM and not one person who’s called on the phone or walked by my desk has even mentioned that today is the sixth anniversary of the day those towers went down. And what’s most surprising to me about that odd fact is that…it doesn’t surprise me at all. Like a lot of other people who were in NYC on that day six years ago, I’d just as soon move on from the continuous analytical overhaul of an event that no one will ever be able to erase from public consciousness.
