RIP Mick Karn
Holy Shit! Just got some more bad news: this time it’s Mick Karn, Bassist for Japan, one of my favorite bands of the late ’70s / early ’80s, who has passed away from cancer at age 52. Here are some of the details from The NME:
“Karn, who revealed in June 2010 that he had been diagnosed with advanced-stage cancer, passed away at his Chelsea home today (January 4), according to a statement on Mickkarn.net. The statement added that Karn “was surrounded by his family and friends” at the time of his death, and that he “will be deeply missed by all.” Born Andonis Michaelides in Nicosia, Cyprus, Karn played with Japan from their formation in 1974 until their split in 1982, and again in 1991 during a brief reunion under the new name Rain Tree Crow. He also worked with Gary Numan, Kate Bush and Bauhaus founder member Peter Murphy, with whom he formed Dalis Car in 1984. Karn moved back to Cyprus in 2004 with his wife and son, but returned to London last year. Following his cancer diagnosis, several appeals were launched via Mickkarn.net to help cover medical costs and offer financial support to his family.
Duran Duran bassist John Taylor today paid tribute to Karn on Duranduran.com, calling him “one of the great visual and sound stylists of the late 70s/early 80s.”
Yes, it Exists: Pikachu Kindergarten School Bus
I never had to take the bus in grade school as we lived just two blocks from the school. Suburbia! But the school bus did always seem like it might be kind of scary for little kids to ride: especially for kindergartners, many of whom are just learning to handle being separated from their moms for the first time in their lives. Scary! A school district in Osaka, Japan solved this separation anxiety problem by customizing the traditional yellow school bus to resemble a cheerful Pikachu – the most popular of all the Pokemon! Who wouldn’t like to ride this bus? School is fun!

Awesome Website of the Day: Hello Kitty Hell
I’ve been aware of the Japanese Pop Culture Quest for World Domination that is Hello Kitty for at least 30 years. Hello Kitty is like Starbucks and McDonalds I guess: it’s just everywhere and we’re powerless to stop it. Personally, being several decades over the age of six, Hello Kitty has little effect on my mental state or the manner in which I live my life. Not so much for the creator of Hello Kitty Hell, a pretty fucking fantastic website blog run by a guy whose wife (and I’m assuming she’s at least in her thirties) is completely and thoroughly obsessed with all things Hello Kitty. Running the hilariously entertaining Hello Kitty Hell blog is evidently his source of release from a 24-7-365 Hello Kitty existence that is his own personal living hell. But I guess it’s cheaper than divorce, and a lot funnier, too.
Fake Plastic Nipples: The Horror
Oh my. This Fake Plastic “Beauty” Nipple prosthesis is truly kind of horrifying, if you happen to suffer from the unfortunate reverse problem (nipples hard ALL THE TIME). Fortunately, ladies with a “perpetual high-beams” situation can investigate getting a pair of silicone “Dimmers.” This fantastic product has made it possible for me to wear tight sweaters in winter again. Thank god!
