Singer Dua Lipa Enjoys a Ring Pop Candy

To me it seems like the ’90s just happened, but I was recently reminded that those born in 1990 are now over 30 years old. Yeah, crazy. The passage of time takes people by surprise, which is one of the reasons nostalgia washes over us in reoccurring waves. Currently, everything old is new again when it comes to the resurgence of Nineties pop culture!

From dance trends, to toys, food, fashion, music and more — we’re consumed with inspiration that allows us to live in the past. It’s no secret that people are willing to spend more if the product reminds them fondly of a previous time, and marketers have been tapping into the trend to drive purchasing power. Just in time for Prime Day, here are a few products from the no-so-distant past that you’re probably seeing more of these days, especially on social media.

Balloon Saloon, The Most Fun Store in NYC!

Balloon Saloon Exterior
All Photos By Gail

We passed by the Balloon Saloon — the store dominates the northeast corner of West Broadway and Duane Streets in Tribeca — on the way to dine at The Odeon Bistro, and just had to stop and take a few photos. Balloon Saloon, which sells all kinds of inflatables, and also delivers every configuration of balloon clusters that you can imagine, was evidently voted The Most Fun Store in NYC; and you don’t even have to enter the store to see why. Because look at all of these Balloon-type Things that they have right out front!

Geoffrey and I went to the opening reception for Kenny Scharf’s Kolors exhibit at Paul Kasmin Gallery on 27th Street. Out front of the gallery this customized golf cart (kart) was parked. We called it the Donut Mobile.

Kenny Scharf Donut Mobile Rear Fins

Dig those rad vintage fin details on the rear end of the Donut Mobile. Kenny did that. The display cases you see there? That’s where the donuts go.

Kenny Scharf Donut Mobile With Donuts

Some people on Kenny’s staff put donuts in the display cases. The donuts were supplied by the Donut Plant on 23rd Street. I did not get a donut, because I was not fast enough. Sadness.

Kenny Scharf Eats a Donut

Kenny ate a donut that was iced purple in the same color as his suit. He seemed very happy. I love his art.
