Video Clip of The Week: Solids, “Blank Stare”
Regardless of how great a song is, I really need a video to grab my attention visually within a few seconds, or it’s not going to get in this here column. “Blank Stare,” by a band called Solids, won me over with its first images of tiny red and yellow houses, contrasted against a blindingly blue lake and an aggressively orange mountain range, which made my eyes almost start watering just from the sheer brightness of the colors. Video Clip of the Week: “Shelley” by Kid Wave
The seductive sound of UK-based quartet Kid Wave was described to me as “Johnny Marr hangin’ with The Beach Boys,” which was enough to pique my interest. But it’s lead singer Lea Emmery’s channeling of PJ Harvey and the minor chord melody entwined with Mattias Bhatt’s opiated guitar work that really hits this tune out of the ballpark. The plaintive refrain, “Let’s Go Surifn,” makes “Shelley” the perfect song for the bittersweet end of summer. Recommended if you like The Jesus and Mary Chain, Mazzy Star or The Sundays. Enjoy!
Video Clip of The Week: “Nunca” By Trails and Ways
Aw man, what a great, breezy, feel-good video to soundtrack a summer in the city. Based out of Oakland, CA, the mixed gender quarter, Trails and Ways, refer to their music as “Bossanova Dream Pop” – which, yeah, I dig it. The group’s just released Trilingual EP, (on Non Market Records, available on iTunes ) draws from band members’ experiences living in Brazil and Spain, and features lyrics sung in Spanish, Portuguese and English. They have an amazing sound and I really love the vibe of this clip for the song “Nunca,” which shows kids surfing, skating, hanging at what looks to me like Venice Beach and making street art. Trails and Ways are currently on tour so maybe they are coming to your town. Check out their tour dates at This Link. In the meantime, Trails and Ways’ “Nunca” is your song and your video for the Summer of 2013!
