In the span of my previous professional incarnation as a music journalist, I was privileged to meet and interview many music legends. But perhaps the greatest meeting I had with any musician had nothing to do with an interview, but rather an art exhibit of his abstract sculptures, and that musician/artist was Herb Alpert. I grew up in the ’60s, listening to my parents’ now-classic albums by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, which are full of so many pop songs I grew to love. To meet Alpert in person was, for me, like meeting one of the Beatles. I still love Herb’s music and I’m very excited to be attending his concert at Lincoln Center on April 1, but here’s more exciting news.

Instagram Photo The Week: Gail Meets Herb Alpert
FaceBook (now Meta) isn’t good for much, other than swiftly bringing about the decline of Western Civilization, but it does offer a handy reminder of everything you’ve done on any given day for the past however many years of your life. How else would I ever call that eight years ago today, Geoffrey and I were bundled up like Eskimos at an art opening of totem-like sculptures by the absolutely legendary musician Help Alpert? I’ve interviewed a ton of famous Rock Stars, but meeting Herb in person did that little thing to me (you know, that little thing). Swoon.

It was worth the wait, because Miles Ahead is a fantastic film. Continue reading Don Cheadle Becomes Miles Davis in Miles Ahead

Perhaps a story doesn’t need to get all the facts exactly right in order to capture the creative and spiritual essence of a person’s life. In writer/director Robert Budreau’s new ‘anti-biopic,’ Born to Be Blue, the life lived by American Jazz Trumpeter Chet Baker is keenly interpreted by actor Ethan Hawke in a surreal but gritty performance that tells you all you need to know about the troubled musical genius — renowned as both a pioneer of the West Coast jazz scene and a style icon — who just couldn’t seem to get out of his own way.

Herb Alpert: Totems & Deities at ACA Galleries
Do you like Herb Alpert? I sure do, My parents had his records with the Tijuana Brass playing all the time in our house, so I have loved his music since I was about five years old. Just being serious.
But did you know that Herb also makes art? This I did not know this until Geoffrey and I stumbled upon one of his art shows that opened Thursday January 16th at ACA Galleries in Chelsea. The show is called Totems & Deities: The Sculpture of Herb Alpert and Anita Huffington — Huffington being a fellow artist who is a successful dancer.
