Chris Campbell is the lead artist and “baker” behind Shoe Bakery, which creates custom footwear resembling an assortment of desserts. Campbell attributes the popularity of his designs — such as these custom Cartoon Cake flats (2023) — to the pleasant and memorable associations we have with sugary foods hardwired in our brains from childhood.

“Everything that revolves around something fun or exciting or memorable has something sweet tied to it,” he says. Here his footwear is transformed into slices of fun ‘cartoon ‘cake, a major baking trend on social media merging two fashionable indulgences: shoes and desserts.
