Cesare Colombo (1930 – 1971), known as Joe Colombo, was an Italian industrial designer. Colombo’s Tube Chair (1969–70) is an iconic piece of modular furniture that embodies his futuristic and flexible design philosophy. Manufactured by Flexform, the chair consists of four cylindrical cushions of varying diameters, which can be rearranged to create different seating configurations.
The elements are covered in vinyl upholstery and connected by hidden fasteners, allowing for a highly adaptable form.
This design reflects Colombo’s interest in transformable, space-saving furniture suited to modern, dynamic living environments. It aligns with his broader vision of habitat systems that cater to changing needs, much like his other works such as the Total Furnishing Unit and the Elda Chair.
Tube Chair of Nesting and Combinable Elements highlights Colombo’s innovative approach to industrial design and modularity. Despite its forward-thinking concept, the chair was discontinued after a short production run, making surviving examples highly collectible.
