Street artist Jorit has recently created a series of murals in downtown Manhattan that explore the profound societal shifts brought on by artificial intelligence, explicitly drawing thematic influence from AI pioneer Geoffrey Hinton. In these new works, the artist blends his signature hyper-realistic portraiture with neural network-inspired patterns, referencing the structure of deep learning models that Hinton helped to develop.
This past weekend, I came accross one of these striking murals on a regular trip to Freeman Alley. The mural depicts a hyper-realistic portrait of a young woman, whose face is partly overlaid with a luminous neural network pattern, evoking brain circuitry and machine learning structures.
Notably, the text “AI Will Kill Us” has been scrawled between the woman’s eyebrows. It isn’t clear whether this is part of the original work, or if it was added by an anonymous tagger (more likely). The placement of the piece in Freeman Alley, known for its rotating, ephermal street art, has made this mural a conversation point among bothstreet art lovers and tech-watchers, at least until it gets tagged into oblivion any day now.
