Designed by Italian conceptual artist Maurizio Cattelan in collaboration with Seletti, this collectible porcelain plate with an image of a Toad Sandwich — pulled from the pages of Cattelan’s provocative, image-only magazine Toilet Paper — is just as charmingly absurd as the rest of the artist’s oeuvre.

Known for his irreverent, often absurdist works that blur the line between humor and critique, Cattelan brings his trademark surrealism to a series of dinner plates, but this one, especially, caught my eye.

Seletti, the Italian design house behind the project, has long embraced collaborations that marry fine art with functional homeware. With Toad Sandwich, the result is a piece that’s equal parts collectible and conversation starter. The juxtaposition of comfort-food and an unexpected amphibian twist nudges the viewer to look twice, laugh, and maybe even reconsider what’s “normal” on the table.

Whether displayed as wall art or used as a cheeky serving piece, Cattelan’s Toad-on-a-Bun plate captures the spirit of contemporary art infiltrating daily life: playful, provocative, and impossible to ignore.
