Pink Thing Of The Day: Pink Marilyn!

When most people think of Andy Warhol, they probably picture Campbell’s Soup cans, Coca-Cola bottles, or his instantly recognizable celebrity portraits. Among those famous faces, none is more iconic than Marilyn Monroe. It actually surprised me to realize that this vibrant pink version of Marilyn, part of the Museum of Modern Art’s collection in NYC, had never made an appearance as a Pink Thing of the Day. That oversight ends now!

Created in 1967, Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe screenprints transformed one of Hollywood’s biggest stars into a Pop Art legend. Using the same publicity photograph from the 1953 film Niagara, Warhol produced multiple versions of Marilyn in wildly different color combinations. Instead of trying to capture a realistic likeness, he turned her into a bold, repeatable image — celebrity, commercial product, and cultural icon.

This particular version is impossible to ignore. Marilyn’s bright yellow hair practically glows against a hot pink background, while her vivid pink eye shadow and lipstick make the portrait feel playful, glamorous, and larger than life. The deliberately unnatural palette is pure Warhol: loud, eye-catching, and impossible to forget.
