Website of the Day: Eff You, Penguin!

“The Cuteness…”

Like me, you probably have a Mom, a friend or a co-worker (or if you are very unlucky, all three) that habitually forwards you emails clogged with pictures of kittens, puppies or other animals making faces or doing similarly “cute” things. Ah, the cuteness. Half the Internets are taken up with photos and videos of the CUTEST. ANIMALS. EVER. Fuck You, Penguin takes a long, hard look at superadorable puppies, monkeys, birds and moose – and tells them, in no uncertain terms, to get fucked. Needless to say, it is my new favorite website.

Five Rad Books I Am Reading Right Now

Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Cherry Bomb!

Ever since the summer, when I served for two weeks on a New York City Grand Jury and was able to read three entire books in ten days, I’ve been on a bit of a reading jag. Here are some books I’m working on right now.

Cherry Bomb by Carrie Borzillo-Vrenna

Carrie was my editor back when I occasionally wrote for the late great All Stars News. She’s the one who assigned me to cover the Shakira Press conference at the Rainbow Room where I got so overwhelmed by my love for Shakira that I actually started crying. Carrie is awesome. Cherry Bomb is her new book where she interviews a bunch of rocker chicks about how and why they rock so hard. Sort of a Guide To Style for Rocker Chicks like me! Expect a more detailed review of Cherry Bomb on this page some time in the future once I finish the book.

Haunted By Chuck Palahniuk

I recently saw the movie Choke, based on one of Palahniuk’s novels, and it made me want to read all of his books. This is the one I am reading now. Think “Survivor meets The Donner Party.” Very scary!

Naked by David Sedaris

Geoffrey let me borrow this one after a friend of a friend of mine made me promise I’d read it.

The Lovely Bones By Alice Sebold

I always wanted to read The Lovely Bones just because I like the title so much. I got a new, hard cover copy on Swaptree.com in exchange for a Katy Perry CD. What a bargain!

I Hate New Music, The Classic Rock Manifesto by Dave Thompson

This book doesn’t come out until November, but I got a reviewer’s copy in the mail just yesterday and I can’t wait to read it, because I hate new music too!

Quote of the Day: Frank Zappa

I am reading this right now

“When we talk about artistic freedom in this country, we sometimes lose sight of the fact that freedom is often dependent on adequate financing.”

Diary of Indignities and a Holiday Rant About Vegetarians

Diary of Indignties
Diary of Indignities = Good Reading!

I just started reading Patrick Hughes’ completely hilarious memoir, Diary of Indignities, a copy of which I strongly recommend you pick up if you, like me, enjoy laughing your ass off at other peoples’ ridiculous misfortune.

Celebrity Sighting: Jack La Lanne!

What a Stud!

Celebrity Sighting Of The Day: Jack La Lanne!

At about 1:00 PM this afternoon I spotted Veteran Fitness Guru Jack La Lanne (age 93) standing in the street at the corner of Wall and William Streets. La Lanne was doing that “Muscle Man” pose on top of a raised platform for photographers while gripping a copy of his latest book, the title of which I did not stop long enough to read. It was pretty hilarious to see all of these stiff Wall Street types jockeying for position among the Asians tourists and  fans for a chance to snap cellphone pictures of Jack, who looked like he was having a blast.
