The Big Fishes is a wonderfully whimsical sculpture that was made from collected and assembled discarded plastic bottles. What a cool way to go green! The sculpture is currently installed at Botafogo Beach in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. At night, the work is illuminated so that beachgoers can continue to enjoy the piece even when it’s dark out!

Ceramic Giant Squid By David Zink Yi

Untitled (Architeuthis) By David Zink Yi, (Photo By Geoffrey Dicker)

Peruvian artist David Zink Yi works in all different types of artistic medium including film, photography and sculpture. Above, you can see his unique sculpture of a giant squid as displayed on the floor of the Houser & Wirth Gallery. The 16 foot long squid (weighing 660 pounds!) is crafted from ceramic coated with a lead and copper glaze. For this exhibit, the artist has it laying in a pool of what appears to be the squid’s own ink, but which is actually dyed corn syrup! Compare the photo above, which shows art fans mingling around the squid at this past Wednesday’s opening party, with the photo below of the squid on the gallery’s bare floor prior to staging, to get an idea of its impact. The squid is part of Zink Yi’s first New York City solo exhibition Pneuma, a group of seven experimental works that juxtaposes the various types of artwork through which Zink Yi expresses his vision.

David Zink Yi’s Pnuema is on Display through July 29, 2011, at Hauser & Wirth, Located at 32 East 69th Street, New York NY 10021. Gallery Hours Are Monday – Friday, 10 AM – 6 PM.

Chicago Unveils Giant Eyeball Sculpture!

EYE Artist’s Rendering

Few will argue that the city of Chicago is a fantastic place to go for a vacation. The food is amazing, there are a million places to go and things to do, and even if the weather is crap – as it was on my recent Chicago vacation – there’s tons of stuff to do indoors. But if you are lucky enough to get the good weather, then you can spend a lot of time outdoors because Chicago has breathtaking architecture and outrageous, randomly scattered, publicly displayed works of art. The latest contribution to Chicago’s city scape is called EYE, a three-story tall eyeball sculpture conceived and created by local Chicago artist Tony Tasset, which was installed earlier this week in Chicago’s Pritzker Park.

Extreme Mammals Exhibit: Something Fun to See When You are Wasted

Extreme Mammals Sign

A couple of weeks ago, I received an invitation to attend a private viewing of Extreme Mammals; the latest new exhibit at the American Museum of Natural History. Of course, there is no way I was going to turn down an invite to see anything labeled “extreme” – especially when it included free drinks! Yes! As part of the evening’s festivities, we were treated first to a wine tasting party (with snacks) held in the museum’s Hall of Ocean Life – the massive, bi-level exhibit room distinguished by the 94 feet-long model of a Blue Whale suspended from the ceiling. Extreme!

OCEANLIFE

After an hour of heavy drinking, many of us staggered off to find the featured exhibit, located on the fourth floor. “Extreme mammals, please!” I announced to the elevator operator, so he would know where we were going; even though it was after hours, the museum was closed, and we really could only have been going to one place.

This is What a Whale With Legs Looks Like

The Extreme Mammals exhibit boasts, “the biggest, smallest and most amazing mammals of all time,” almost all of which are now extinct, so you are really not going to see them in a zoo.  Made up of fossils, bones, models and various recreations, the exhibit includes a lot of required reading (Extreme!). So, even though it was fun to be drunk while viewing the various mammals and their extremeness, I would not recommend being so ‘out of it’ that you forget how to read, because then you would miss out on a lot
