Limited Runs Presents the Marilyn Monroe Red Velvet Collection

Marilyn Monroe Red Velvet Series

There would probably be little argument that Marilyn Monroe is the most legendary and iconic Hollywood Movie Star to have ever lived. Countless contemporary artists — from Andy Warhol to Ron English, Ad Infinitum — have captured and re-appropriated her likeness into their own works, and her image still turns heads wherever it appears. While she did not have a long life, she certainly has achieved immortality in a sense. Limited Runs, a company that specializes in Classic Hollywood and other Fine Art Photography has just released the Marilyn Monroe Red Velvet Collection, which  features her famous nude shots circa 1949 that originally appeared on promotional calendars. Now you can all own prints of these gorgeous photographs that were at one time so controversial, they had to be “dressed” in superimposed lingerie in order to be sent through the mail.

Marilyn Monroe Red Velvet Series Calendar

Above is an example one of these calendars, where Monroe’s breasts have been blocked out to avoid being labeled as pornography — pretty hilarious when you consider the types of fashion photography and figure modeling that has become acceptable, and even mainstream, in the past 70 or so years. One of the Red Velvet poses made her the first Playboy Sweetheart — the prototype for the centerfold-featured Playmates who would follow in years to come.

Black Sabbath Haunted Maze Is Part of Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood

Black Sabbath Halloween Horror Nights

Black Sabbath Rocks Universal Studios Hollywood’s ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ as
A New 3D Maze Inspired by the World-Renowned Band Joins the Line-Up
of Blood-Curdling Haunted Attractions at the Award-Winning Extreme Terror Event

Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath, the celebrated, multi-platinum rock band that pioneered the Heavy Metal genre with their dark and doom-laden sounds, fused with lyrical themes of the occult, addiction, war and nuclear apocalypse, will be immortalized in an all-original, terrifying 3D maze, Black Sabbath: 13 3D at Universal Studios Hollywood’s premier Halloween Horror Nights event, beginning September 20th, 2013.

The new maze, based on the darkest lyrics from Black Sabbath’s biggest hit songs — and the only attraction at the horror event to incorporate 3D video — will also include scenes inspired by the legendary band’s recently released Billboard #1 album, 13. A nightmarish landscape of doom will engulf guests as they enter Black Sabbath: 13 3D and traverse through horrifying graveyards, disturbing madhouses and bone-chilling battlefields.

“We were all really excited when Universal Studios Hollywood approached us about doing a 3D ‘Halloween Horror Nights’ maze based on our music,” said Black Sabbath’s Ozzy Osbourne. “I’ve seen the drawings of what it will look like when it’s finished and it looks amazing. I can’t wait to walk through it on opening night in September.”

Guests will come face to face with a heart-stopping Lucifer and his bride, blood-soaked dead bodies and bubbling pools of “radioactive water” while song’s inspired by “Luke’s Wall,” “Iron Man,” “Paranoid,” “War Pigs,” “Electric Funeral” and – of course – “Black Sabbath” violently penetrate the confines of the maze at high volume.

Very Scary!

From Unusual Life:

Shown: Walter Dymond, groundskeeper of Harold Lloyd’s estate, Greenacres, with the Lloyd Christmas Tree. Dymond was responsible for the construction of the Christmas tree from two trees (wiring the branches of one into the other), and placement of the ornaments where Mr Lloyd directed. Harold and his wife Mildred decorated it every year from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve, and collected thousands of ornaments for it from all over the world. It was 20 feet tall, 9 feet wide and almost 30 feet around. The tree was fire-proofed and remained up all year. – (1972)

Pink Thing of the Day: Jayne Mansfield’s Pink Palace

Did you know that legendary Hollywood movie actress /sex symbol Jayne Mansfield and her husband, Mickey Hargitay, once lived in a mansion that was known as The Pink Palace? While it was painted pink on the outside and had a pretty crazy Pink Bathroom (that was not only carpeted wall to wall but also floor to ceiling) few of the interior rooms had a pink color scheme. Still, The Pink Palace – which included a custom-designed, heart shaped swimming pool — had a unique design aesthetic and no shortage of over-the-top decor! See more photos of Jayne and The Pink Palace, which was demolished in 2002, at This Link.

The exhibit includes beautifully photo-realistically rendered film stills coupled with either his pixilation effects and/or details which appear to be inspired by both Skateboard and Tattoo culture. The juxtaposition of images is very cool and gives Bryant’s work a youthful, Pop Culture appeal while maintaining an air of sophistication. Smoke and Mirrors also includes a selection of custom skateboard decks, which are so hot right now, and custom painted sneakers.

This exhibit is lots of fun and highly recommended. Plus the people who work at Porter Contemporary are super nice, friendly and helpful should you have any questions about the art.

Paul McCartney Gets a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!

Paul McCartney Gets a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Hollywood, Ca. February 10, 2012 – 50-plus years and counting of breaking boundaries and making history and Paul McCartney shows no sign of slowing. In a historic week in Los Angeles that began with the release of his brand new album Kisses On The Bottom (Hear Music/Concord) and will culminate in his appearance at the 54th annual Grammy Awards, Paul found time for two landmarks in one day on Thursday, February 9. First, in a ceremony that drew a traffic-stopping throng on Vine Street, Paul accepted his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. After a heartfelt dedication from Neil Young, Paul’s star was unveiled in its rightful place next to those of fellow Beatles John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr (and in close proximity to Buddy Holly!).

Hours later, Paul performed the bulk of Kisses On The Bottom live from Capitol Studios streamed exclusively on iTunes. The once in a lifetime performance plus excerpts from the events of the day can be streamed on demand exclusively for a limited time on iTunes (iTunes.com/PaulMcCartney). Tonight Paul will receive the MusiCares Person Of The Year award for his contributions to the worlds of music and philanthropy. Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Tony Bennett, Norah Jones, Duane Eddy, Neil Young and many more will perform numbers from Paul’s unparalleled catalogue, with a finale featuring Paul himself.

Sunday night, February 12, Paul will conclude this incredible week with a climactic performance at the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, where Paul McCartney & Wings’ Band On The Run is nominated in the Best Historical Album category.

And I must add that Paul must have recently undergone an additional assload of plastic surgery, because he looks fucking amazing.
