Clive Murphys’s Post Neo Proto Demo exhibit is one that Geoffrey and I literally stumbled onto while in the same West 26th Street building for an entirely different exhibit. But I was immediately drawn into the Magnan Metz Gallery’s street level space because I cannot resist an exhibit that mixes Contemporary art with Modern Furniture Design. So, yeah. Audiophiles, check this out! Designed by Denmark-based studio Genanvendt, the LP Table Lamp creates a soft and subdued lighting, thanks not only to the records themselves (which help moderate the glow) but also to the screen of translucent material creating a cylinder around the light bulb itself. The LP Table Lamp is available in different sizes with different numbers of LPs. Purchasing information is available at This Link.
Living in Manhattan is awesome, but it ain’t cheap. If you’ve visited NYC and had the “pleasure” of booking a hotel room, you also know that a few nights’ lodging can easily drain your wallet of $1,000 or more. Ouch. To save some serious cash, but still enjoy centrally located, comfy NYC accommodations, lots of travelers turn to apartment swapping, and this is where a website like MetroGuest comes in handy. More than a marketplace for vacation and other property rentals, MetroGuest is a community of hosts (property owners) and travelers looking to find an easy, complete and reliable alternative to the traditional booking process. Life is but a Dream. That lyric from a ubiquitously famous children’s song takes on a deeper, and far more surreal, meaning when placed in reference to certain forms of contemporary art. For me, the experience of any kind of artwork is always more satisfying when it can facilitate transportation to an alternate reality or dreamlike state. Having taken possession of a massive, street level space in Chelsea, the 7eleven Gallery is currently hosting just such an experience; a group exhibit entitled Make Yourself at Home.
It is no secret that I am a huge fan of BravoTV’s reality programming. Project Runway, Sheer Genius, Top Chef, Top Design – I love all that crap. So I got a little thrill this afternoon when Geoffrey and I were at the Museum of Modern Art and I spotted Nathan Thomas, winner of Top Design’s second season. I was actually so excited that I forgot I am supposed be a jaded rock critic and I walked right up and asked if he was Nathan from Top Design, and he said yes, he was. I introduced myself and mentioned what a huge fan I am of the show and of his design work in particular. Then we made small talk about the art for about a minute before I excused myself and scampered off to find Geoffrey, because people are probably always recognizing him in public and bugging him and blah blah blah. Anyway, he was REALLY nice!
