Omar Chacon’s Las Mesalinas y Otros Ensayos at Margaret Thatcher Projects

While there was not exactly an excess of Hot Art Action going on in Chelsea this past Thursday, I am ecstatic to report that abstract/pop artist Omar Chacon is back at Margaret Thatcher Projects with a fun new collection of works entitled Las Mesalinas y Otros Ensayos. I had the chance to reconnect with Chacon at the opening reception and can say that he is just as charming and saucy as he was when we met previously at the opening of his second show at Margaret Thatcher, Bacanales Tropicales, which was more than three years ago now. Wow!

This show contains pieces that emulate the style of the those paintings found in Bacanales Tropicales, colorful works that  Chacon compares to a social gathering or, on a larger scale, a nation; comprised of a diverse blend of culturally different peoples, living amongst each other with a sense of unity, yet maintaining individuality. To me, these concentric ovals look like layers of many different colored eyeballs.

Each oval and drip is prepared separately, off the canvas, and is unique. Chacon then applies and collages each piece onto canvas or paper, building intricate and harmonious compositions.

Chacon has also added paintings created from many layers of dripped paint. Introducing deeper shades of gold and purple, he draws inspiration from the traditional imperial colors of the Roman monarchies, and he explores the delicacy and power of the monochrome, with works such as RT Mesalina .

Rich with subtle movement and variation throughout, these works showcase a fresh layer of complexity. While Bacanales Tropicales referenced the wild and festive spirit of the god Bacchus, the artist continues to draw energy from the history of Greco-Roman excess. The exhibition’s title refers to Valeria Messalina, the third wife of the Emperor Claudius — who was executed after she married her lover while Claudius was out of town. The raucous tales of her exploits, real or exaggerated, fascinate Chacon as they have writers and fine artists throughout the centuries.

I asked Omar how long it takes him to make one of these paintings, and he said, “About three days.” Crazy.

Here he is posing in front of one of his paintings, which is called Nimaima. This exhibit is up until December, so you have no excuse not to check it out!

Tim Ripley Presents Biomorph at Denise Bibro Fine Art

I was initially attracted to the art of Tim Ripley due to it’s resemblance to the layered paint-drip works of Omar Chacon. Click that link and you’ll see what I mean. What I discovered when I arrived at Denise Bibro Fine Art  — a gallery space that I had never visited before, despite the fact that it is in the same building as Jonathan LeVine — is that while there are some basic visual similarities between the art of Chacon and Ripley, the artists are working in very different creative spaces.

Ripley’s latest exhibit, Biomorph, is a mix of sculptures and digitally rendered prints of his colorful, organic creations. In his second exhibit at Denise Bibro, Ripley continues to employ his complex, multi-layer process of sculpting, photographing, digital rendering, and eventually painting his refined oil on panel paintings.

His works explore the ideas of biological and mechanical reproduction. His new candy-colored polymer sculptures are comprised of thousands of tiny structures in polymer clay that are attached to the larger sculpted biomorphic surface. In a manner that references complex growth systems, his narratives involve “mitosis, mutations, inequality, and rebellion.”

This a fun show that’s also “Family Friendly,” which is good to know!

Omar Chacon’s Bacanales Tropicales at Margaret Thatcher Projects

Wow, what treat it was to be able to attend this past Thursday’s opening reception for Colombian-born, NYC-based artist Omar Chacon, who has returned to Margaret Thatcher Projects for his second solo show at the gallery in two years!

Bacanales Tropicales collects new paintings in Chacon’s signature and instantly recognizable style, where droplets of color-saturated paint create layer upon layer of concentric circles and ovals of various sizes, shapes and endlessly variable color combinations.

For the work in the above photo, Chacon purposefully shows the detail of the many, many layers of paint that make up each canvas.

It’s amazing how diverse the works are, considering each is created via the same method, but it seems that each new canvas you come upon is even more eye-popping than the previous.

Chacon’s unique style has made him one of my favorite contemporary artists, so it was also really nice to be able to meet him at Thursday’s opening. Omar is super cool: certainly one of the friendliest and, to use Geoffrey’s term, “Sauciest” Art personalities I’ve met. What a pleasure to know that such a talented artist is also so appreciative of his fans! Bacanales Tropicales is my favorite exhibit currently showing, so please make a trip over to Margaret Thatcher Projects to check out the the visually dazzling work of Omar Chacon while the show is still up!
