Rock Lives at NYC’s R&R Hall of Fame Annex

The Beatles!

It has been pretty freezing ass cold in NYC these past few weeks. But I don’t think you could have asked for a more beautiful mid-winter day on Sunday, and it certainly was perfect weather to uncover your head, strip down to maybe one or two layers and make the trip down to Soho to visit the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex. Because it is no secret that I like to Rock. Geoffrey snagged a few discount tickets on Goldstar, so I met him and his friend Susie outside the Annex and we got ready to rock like nobody’s business.

Our visit began in a small theater with a fifteen minute film featuring live performances and notable quotes from many of the artists ensconced in the HOF. My favorite clips were The Beatles, The Who and The Doors. They did show a live clip of Queen (I saw them five times back in the 70s), but it was from after Freddie Mercury cut his hair off and started looking like one of the Village People. So it did not yank my chain quite as hard as it would had it been one of those satin-jumpsuit-wearing Freddie clips. Anyway, when I saw Jim Morrison in his leather pants singing, “Come on baby, light my fire,” like the immortal Sex God that he is, well, I got a little teardrop.

Ringo Starr Will Accept No More Fan Mail!

“Stop With the Fan Mail, Will Ya? Peace Out.”

As much as I love Ringo Starr, everybody knows that the former Beatles’ drummer – despite being one of the wealthiest, most successful and most popular musicians in the history of world – is generally the butt of all Beatles-related jokes. That’s likely due to the widely perpetuated style of humor known as the “Drummer Joke” and the easily-dispelled-but-still-fun myth that the drummer in every band is retarded. We all know that isn’t true, and that the drummer is in fact the most important member of the band. Plus Ringo is actually a bad ass on the kit.

Final Day for John Lennon Art Exhibit in NYC!

It is no secret that The Beatles were the greatest band ever in the universe of all time. For those Beatles and John Lennon fans in or near New York City, Sunday October 12, 2008  is the final day to see a moving and impressive collection of John Lennon’s drawings and song lyrics entitled “Imagine Peace.” Geoffrey and I went yesterday and spent about an hour enjoying the funny, insightful and often provocative collection of over 100 drawings and framed lyrics of songs from both The Beatles’ and Lennon’s solo catalogs. Some of my favorites were colorful sketches John did with his son Sean, like the frog drawing seen above. They also play Beatles songs non-stop over the gallery’s sound system, which makes it an even more enjoyable experience, because you can work in a little dancing! Sadly, the exhibit has a limited run which ends this evening. Do try to make it by if you can. Gallery address info is below.

Exhibit is at Openhouse Gallery, 201 Mulberry St., in SoHo. Hours: Thursday night 5-9; Friday 12-9 p.m.; Sat. 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.; Sun. 11 a.m.-6p.m. The suggested $2 donation benefits City Meals-On-Wheels.

Happy Birthday to Sean and John Lennon

I think it’s pretty cool that Sean Lennon was born on his father’s birthday, October 9th, so that now that John is gone, they still have this day of connection. Sean Lennon (born in 1975) is 33 years old today. John (born in 1940) would have been 68.
