British pop artist Peter Blake never really became a household name here in the US despite having designed one of the most famous and iconic album covers of all time; that of the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. While Blake is often called “the Godfather of Pop Art” – and his work is widely shown and collected throughout Europe – he has rarely shown in the United States. World Tour, now on display through June 18th, 2011 at New York’s Mary Ryan Gallery is only his third exhibition in New York since 1962.
On This Date, March 19th in 1982: Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist Randy Rhoads died in a plane crash in Leesburg, FL when the plane crashed into Osbourne’s tour bus. The pilot Andrew Aycock – who caused the crash by trying to “buzz” the top of the bus as a prank – and hairdresser Rachel Youngblood were also killed. Rhoads was 25 years old. 2010 has been a great year for seeing some of my favorite stand up comedians: Ricky Gervais, Demitri Martin, and just last night I was lucky to catch Daniel Tosh – certainly one of the most wildly popular comedians on the circuit right now – at the first of two shows he played at New York City’s Beacon Theater. I’ve been an avid fan of Tosh’s Comedy Central show, Tosh.0, since I discovered it accidentally about a year ago. On This Date, August 8th in 1996: Kiss was performing at the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati on their reunion tour when a fan threw a prosthetic leg onstage. The band signed the limb and handed it back to the fan. Rock & Roll!
