Chicago is a fabulous city and home to one of the most beautifully curated art museums (The Art Institute) in the world. That said, it definitely does not enjoy a socially vibrant art scene that is equivalent to that of NYC — with its vast number of galleries in Chelsea, the LES, Midtown and Uptown. While the NYC art scene hosts a weekly (Thursday) night of opening receptions in galleries across the city, Chicago has one such evening per month, which is called Second Friday. Taking place in the Chicago Arts District (also known as Pilsen) Second Fridays Gallery Night is a monthly evening of opening receptions at the galleries and artists’ studios along South Halsted Street. If you’re a tourist and have the chance to attend Second Fridays only once, the one studio you must absolutely must not miss is House of The Apocalypse.

Video Clip of The Week: LPX, “Might Not Make It Home”

If you’ve spent time living in New York City, you’ve likely had more than one night out (and by ‘night’ I mean all night) that will make this week’s Video Clip feel very familiar. The tune is “Might Not Make It Home” — an anthemic, nightlife battle cry as delivered by LPX (aka Lizzy Plapinger). Some may recognize Plapinger as one-half of the enigmatic pop duo MS MR (pronounced Miz Mister), which is currently on hiatus while the singer/songwriter explores this new project. To me, it certainly seems like she has found her groove.

Warriors Mural By London Police at Coney Art Walls

I don’t pretend to be an authority on the subject, but I’d guess that there’s no modern-era film more closely-associated with the locale of Coney Island, Brooklyn than Walter Hill’s 1979 adventure/ drama, The Warriors. If you haven’t seen the film, I recommend it. Two thumbs up! My point being that it’s completely appropriate that this year’s Coney Art Walls installation includes an underwater-themed, mermaid fantasy mural by British street art collective, The London Police that includes an homage to this now classic, cinematic favorite.
