For all of you Queen Freaks and Freddie-o-philes out there, it is my pleasure to bring you another of Freddie Mercury’s stage costumes photographed by me at Sotheby’s when I was in London. This dazzling outfit, a Scarlet Sequined, short-legged one-piece stage suit, is a truly iconic and historic piece of rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia and a testament to Freddie’s flamboyant style and unforgettable stage presence.
Sotheby’s auction catalog describes the Stage Suit as follows:
[A] scarlet sequin-encrusted, long sleeved, short-legged one piece stage suit, slashed to the waist. The neckline, hems of the shorts and cuffs are hand-stitched inside with a band of black elastic, with the sequins applied to a ground of red stretch cotton. The designer/ maker is Natasha Kornilof.
This short-legged stage suit was a late addition to Freddie’s wardrobe for the News Of The World tour in 1978 as a partner to his full-length Silver Sequin Catsuit. It is said to have primarily been worn by Freddie for the encore.
With its unique historical significance and connection to one of rock music’s greatest legends, is a highly sought-after collector’s piece. Given its remarkable provenance, exquisite craftsmanship, and connection to a legendary moment in rock history, it is not shocking to learn that the Scarlet Sequined Stage Suit recently sold to a private collector for the sum of 40,640 GBP.
Photographed as Part of Freddie Mercury: A World of His Own at Sotheby’s Auction House in London, UK.
