There’s a saying that being older (i.e. Baby Boomer generation) carries perks such as living at a time that allowed you to see all of the really cool bands in concert. I’ll own it. I have many priceless concert memories from the 1970s — like seeing The Who when the ticket price was $12! For me though, the real coupe was seeing Queen live in concert on each of the Night at The Opera, Day at The Races, and News of The World tours, and twice when they toured in support of their 1978 release, Jazz.  For this then-teenage Queen fan, my fervent ardor for Freddie Mercury and company moved beyond ‘favorite band’ status to being more like a religion, or a way of life. Guaranteed to Blow Your Mind: Queen’s Entire Album Catalog on a Collectible Golden Orb!

Queen Golden Orb Collection Digital Album Archive

As the surviving members of Queen continue their seemingly endless celebration of the band’s forty year anniversary – which kicked off with last year’s Deluxe Reissues of their entire catalog – an all new box set of Queen Tunes is about to be made available for fans who don’t mind throwing down $350: the Queen Orb Gift Box. A “true electronic age marvel,” the Golden Orb contains an ornately decorated USB drive, which holds all 15 (re-mastered) Queen studio albums – in both 320kbps MP3 and 24-bit 44.1kHz WAV format (fully PC and Mac compatible) – as well as a massive photo gallery to waste hours and hours of time looking at and downloading to your FaceBook page. Buyers also get a gold-plated Queen crest pendant necklace inside a tiny red velvet pouch, and, of course, the Golden Orb itself, which is quite impressive on its own (just look at it!). And it comes in a fancy black velvet box for storage. Fancy!

Produced in a limited edition series of 5,000 numbered units, The Queen Golden Orb (which quickly sold out its limited first run last December) will be available to purchase on April 2nd, 2012 at This Link.

Happy Birthday, Freddie Mercury

Freddie at MSG, 1975

1946 – 1991

If Freddie Mercury were still alive he’d be 61 years old today. Freddie deserves to be remembered on his special day because no other rock star ever had as big an impact on me personally as Freddie. If not for his heavy stylish influence I surely would not have attended my high school classes wearing black nail polish (on one hand only), flowing Zandra Rhodes-inspired tops, tight black satin pants and an Egyptian Asp arm band. Queen pretty much lost me after they released Jazz (1978) but everything they did up to and including News of The World (1977) is brilliant and their debut album, Queen (1973) remains one of my favorite records of all time.
