Among the standout pieces at the recent Boutique Design NY (BDNY) show was a lamp that masterfully blended art, function, and nostalgia — a brushed steel-finish stick table lamp designed to evoke the illuminated essence of a traffic signal. This bold and imaginative design, featured in La Corsa Lounge (booth #1559), proved to be much more than a conversation starter.
The lamp’s most striking feature is its four flattened orb-shaped blown glass shades, each rendered in a vibrant, automotive-inspired palette of yellow, green, orange, and red. These hues, reminiscent of traffic lights, popped brilliantly against the polished metal stem, creating an engaging interplay of industrial minimalism and playful whimsy.
Anchoring the lamp’s automotive theme is its gear-shaped plinth and steering wheel-shaped base — a nod to the meticulous craftsmanship of 1970s Italian race cars, from Lamborghini to Ferrari. The retro racing culture inspiration continued throughout the La Corsa Lounge, transforming the booth into an immersive homage to hand-crafted touring cars. The setting, curated by Suomi Design Works in collaboration with lamp-designer HB Lighting, Fil Doux Textiles, Montague Furniture, and Forth Surfaces, was as dynamic as the lamp itself, capturing the spirit of speed, elegance, and Italian design with precision.
More than a lighting fixture, this lamp is a celebration of design storytelling, seamlessly tying into the booth’s broader concept.
