Coffin in the Form of a Sneaker

Nike Coffin 2

In some regions of Ghana, it is typical for the shape and style of a coffin to make a personal statement by reflecting the profession, interests, or characteristics of the deceased. The mother of many children, for example, might have a coffin in the shape of a hen with chicks. In this case it is a Nike sneaker, a symbol of status and modernity in the late 20th century. As people make the transition from one world to the unknown next, an object (a coffin) representing another object (in this case, a shoe) provides comforting familiarity.

Coffin in the Form of a Sneaker (1990) by Paa Joe was Photographed in the Brooklyn Museum.

Blossom By Sanford Biggers

This interesting sculpture is called Blossom and it was created by the artist Sanford Biggers in 1970. Blossom is on exhibit (apparently on its own as opposed to being part of a particular show) at the Brooklyn Museum.

If you’re a fan of costume and couture exhibits, and you thought that 2011’s Alexander McQueen exhibit, Savage Beauty (which dominated traffic at The Met for close to a year) was amazing, then your head will definitely explode when you see the Brooklyn Museum’s must-see extravaganza,The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk. We arrived at the Brooklyn Museum not really knowing what to expect, and were so blown away by this expansive and wildly impressive exhibit that you can count on the 100 or so photographs I snapped during yesterday’s visit being spread out over several blog posts. Happy Birthday, Keith Haring!

Keith Haring Google Doodle

Artist Keith Haring was born on this day May 4th in 1958. Keith passed on when he was just 31 years old — so young! But his art and message live on, and today Google honors what would have been Keith’s 54th Birthday with a fun Doodle inspired by his art. If you live in the tri-state area, be sure to see the Keith Haring retrospective up now through July 8th, 2012 at the Booklyn Museum.
