In Jean Paul Gaultier’s Spring/Summer 1996  Cyberbaba collection, the designer fused high-tech futurism with earthy sensuality, creating garments that blurred the boundaries between skin, surface, and identity. Among its most striking looks is a classic woman’s tailored suit — crisp jacket and pants — that, on closer inspection, reveals a printed illusion: the muscular torso of a man, rendered in red, mapped directly onto the fabric. Known as the  Cyber Muscle Suit, was recently spotted as part of  Dress, Dreams, and Desire: Fashion and Psychoanalysis at the Museum at FIT, where it stands as a provocative study in how fashion visualizes the unconscious. In one dramatic scene, Mizrahi appears crestfallen to learned that designer Jean Paul Gaultier has also produced and ‘Eskimo-inspired’ collection — but Mizrahi need not have worried. His ebullient and cheerful take on Arctic chic — which include Technicolor Parka’s and billowing, vibrantly striped even skirts — in no way resembled Gaultier’s more literal adaptations.

John Paul Gaultier was among the createurs who helped make French fashion so exciting in the 1980s. The way he played with conventions of sex and gender, in particular, has had a profound influence on fashion. For example, rather than using corsetry to reinforce conventional ideals of beauty, Gaultier has always emphasized that many body types, genders and ages can be attractive. This Orange Shirred Velvet Corset Dress, featuring Gaultier’s signature cone bra top (made famous by Madonna) is from his 1984 Fall collection.
