Video Clip of The Week: “Era” by Fiancé

It must be said that we were instantly charmed by the lush pop fugue of Fiancé’s “Era” — a shoegazery sonic delight that endures for nearly five full minutes! Apparently, this Delaware-based quartet that have yet to release an album are already drawing comparisons to Tame Impala — high praise indeed — but I think the nod indicates more that Fiancé are doing something worth listening to than that they are jumping on an aural bandwagon. The sound is too confident and too retro for that. Visually, the live performance footage filtered through a mirror ball haze is all you need to complete the package, but the band throw in an Easter egg of inter-cut footage of a teenage girl in one of those trendy, new StyleWe party dresses enjoying the late days of summer before possibly meeting a sudden and violent end? You’ll have to ask the band what that is all about.

Fiancé will release their debut EP, appropriately titled EP1, on October 7th via SQE Music. The EP — recorded to quarter inch tape on a Tascam 388 tape machine, which totally demystifies why it just sounds so effing good — will be available digitally and on vinyl and can be pre-ordered in the SQE Online Store. It’s somewhat funny that last week’s video clip was referred to by me as being “Kaleidoscopic,” and yet this week we are featuring a video in which actual images from a kaleidoscope are used. So, random!

“Nothing to Say” by Toronto psychedelic quartet Wish fills me with that happy-yet-wistful feeling that comes with reluctantly accepting the inevitable end of summer, but I think it might also be appropriate to soundtrack a romantic breakup that you are secretly relieved about.

Video Clip of The Week: Ski Lodge, “Does It Bring You Down”

Confession: To me, a band with the name Ski Lodge sounds more like it would be one of those shitty, incessantly whining emo-core bands than a legitimately interesting band whose music indicates a worshiping at the alter of revered ’80s Brit Pop groups like James and The Smiths. Just being serious. Even though the protagonist of this video clip for “Does It Bring You Down” seems to not necessarily be living the most fun life imaginable, watching the video makes me want to ride down PCH in a convertible and then eat a big sandwich. In fact, I am hungry right now.

Another observation: What a remarkably talented rhythm section this band has! Wowy McWow! Also, they are from New York – they are not even British! With Ski Lodge, the surprises just don’t stop coming!

Video Clip of the Week: Plaid, “Wallet”

It’s hard to believe that the electronica duo, Plaid have been around almost as long as I’ve been writing about music. And yet, it’s true.

Plaid released its latest album, Reachy Prints (Warp Records) in mid-May along with this hypnotic video for the track “Wallet,” which was directed by Sabrina Ratté. Ratté offers that, “the video is inspired by the idea of creating a world based on memories, where things seem real but they are in fact a construction of the mind. All the images are made from electronic signals, from which were created a reproduction of a sun, different landscapes and cities. The musical composition induced the vision of bright colors and daylight atmosphere, so the simulated sunlight became a central element of the video, thus creating dazed images where everything is diffused and hard to grasp.”

New Slash Album Features Artwork by Ron English

Ron English Slash Cover Artwork

World on Fire, the new album by Slash Featuring Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators, which hits stores on September 17th will feature a brightly colored, collage design by Popaganda artist, Ron English.

English previously created the cover art for Slash’s self-titled solo album released in 2010 and he has also designed limited edition, collectible art toys inspired by the former GNR Guitarist, such as this Top Hat-Adorned Bust Sculpture. Very cool!
