Wedged between viewing rad new art by both Lynda Benglis and Herb Alpert, we popped into Jim Kempner on 23rd and 10th during last Thursday’s Art Crawl to check out a very fun exhibit. Taking Appropriation Art to a hilarious new level, painter John Grande presents his new series of portraits depicting pop culture icons superimposed with the distinctive design of Damien Hirst’s famous Spot Paintings. 30 Seconds to Mars, featuring actor Jared Leto on guitar and lead vocals, has unveiled the name and the release date for its fourth studio album. Love Lust Faith + Dreams will hit all the usual outlets on May 21st, 2013. The album features 12 new tracks, including the first single, “Up in the Air”, which is now available at all digital retailers. Damien Hirst Designs 2012 BRIT Award Statue

The BRIT Award statue designed by British artist Damien Hirst has been revealed for the first time today (January 10). Hirst is the third iconic British artist to be let loose on the BRIT statue, following fashion designer Vivienne Westwood in 2011 and Sergeant Pepper artist Peter Blake last year. Hirst has adorned the statue with his trademark spot painting aesthetic. You can see a larger image of the statue below. Speaking about his role with the BRITs, Hirst said: “I am honoured to be asked to design this year’s statue, it has become such an iconic award, I love the BRITs.”

Damien Hirst Inspired Backpacks Sell for $55 K!

Talk about an unexpected alliance. Luxury fashion accessory retailer, Just One Eye has announced a new project based on a collaboration between renowned contemporary artist Damien Hirst and Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen’s handbag company, The Row. You can’t make this stuff up.

Created in a limited edition of 12 pieces in each of nine designs, and with a portion of each sale to benefit UNICEF, these works blur the line between high art and high fashion. Signed by the artist, each backpack features uniquely individual embellishments, from an assortment of prescription pills (an homage to the Medicine Cabinets series), to Hirst’s signature Spot Paintings. These Backpacks will sell for around $55,000 each (not a misprint) but you have to call for an exact price. Available from 12/12/12, or maybe already sold out, at This Link.
