Street artist Ivan Orama is at it again, depicting polarizing celebrities and controversial public icons as McDonalds Restaurant’s clown mascot, Ronald McDonald. Previous victims have included Kim and Kanye, Michael Jackson and Mike Tyson, so it was only a matter of time until candidate for the GOP Presidential nomination, Donald Trump (a clown if there ever was one) received the Ivanorama treatment. Of course, Mr. OneTeas mines a similar vein of social commentary with his Wack Donald’s Project, but we say, the more, the merrier!
I only wish I had gotten to this poster before it had been defaced by one or more of Trump’s innumerable naysayers, but what can you do. At least Donald McTrump appears to have better hair! People were lined up to get this thing into their Instagram feed.
Must See Art: Michael Leavitt’s Empire Peaks

File this one under “Must See Art” because you won’t want to miss Michael Leavitt’s latest exhibit at Jonathan Levine Gallery, entitled Empire Peaks. Continuing with the theme he did to perfection with Art Army Royalty back in 2011, Leavitt’s latest collection of what could loosely be called pop culture action figures takes a Star Wars theme and turns that wildly popular franchise’s characters into recognizable icons of history, politics and entertainment. The show is totally off the hook! Even if you’re not a total Star Wars geek (raises hand) you’re going to enjoy the high-quality representations of some very recognizable individuals, both real and fictional.
There’s not really much more to be said except that you’ve to go see this show! Here are some of my favorite pieces from the exhibit.

The Sucklord was in attendance at the opening reception! You may know The Sucklord from his appearance on season two of Bravo’s Work of Art, or from his line of unlicensed Star Wars parody toys, marketed under the name Suckadelic. He was pretty cool to talk to.

You can tell even from these photographs that the detail is absolutely impeccable on all of these figures. Not only does each figure look exactly like its real-life counterpart, but Leavitt perfectly captures the essence of each Star Wars character in the melding of the two individual identities. High-fives all around on this one.

Donald Trump to Gene Simmons: You’re Fired!

And…another Self-Righteous Blowhard Bites The Dust. I tore myself away from the last five minutes of Gordon Ramsey’s Kitchen Nightmares (BBC version) last night so I could watch Gene Simmons get his arrogant, chauvinistic ass fired on Donald Trump’s latest public travesty, Celebrity Apprentice. I understand that the faux boardroom drama at the end of each episode is supposed to be a total surprise, but I read enough spoilers on various Reality TV blogs to smell it coming.
You can read the recap here, because I can’t really comment on the rest of the episode. I only know that it was great, evil fun for me to see Gene get kicked off Trump Island, but probably really sad for the show’s producers, knowing that now a gazillion Kiss fans will have no reason to watch this shitty program. Anyway, this whole thing reminded me of a hilarious story about Gene Simmons that I just have to share.
My friend Dave is a pretty big deal rock critic legend who has interviewed everybody on the planet and always does an amazing job, because that is the kind of seasoned pro he is. Dave recently conducted an interview with Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley during which Paul participated only via a phone link, as the Star Child apparently does not like to leave his house. Dave noted that Gene and Paul are so comfortable doing interviews in this manner that they practically go into automatic pilot mode, with Gene fielding one question and Paul taking on the following question, and so on. At one point, while it was Paul’s turn to speak, Dave noticed that Gene was busying himself with some task that involved holding something in his hands. When Dave looked closer, he realized that Gene was . . . balancing his checkbook during the interview! And that, my friend, is a true story.
