Innovation is at every turn in this day and age. You only have to look at the iPhone 6 compared to this year’s iPhone 16, for example, to see just how far computer technology has come. Then, there are other major advancements, such as those in the medical industry: AI-powered CT scanners are now a thing, for example.
Some of the most important advancements, however, have been those to do with sustainability. Protecting the planet is a hot topic these days, and there are dozens of ways society is changing to reflect that.

If you’re looking for a piece of furniture that doesn’t just sit there but instead tells a deeply layered story — equal parts eco-conscious innovation, cultural revival, and visual poetry — look no further than Fernando Laposse’s Lovebird Agave Cabinet.
Recently added to the Brooklyn Museum’s permanent collection, this sculptural cabinet is a showpiece in every sense of the word. But calling it a cabinet almost feels reductive. It’s more like a creature —soft-edged, inviting, and covered in shaggy, colorful “feathers” made from dyed agave fibers. Think: Big Bird goes haute couture, with a sustainability mission as a bonus.

Every year, 80 billion honeybees are trucked into California’s Central Valley to pollinate nearly one million acres of almonds trees. This past February was history’s greatest gathering of honeybees, coming at a time when hive populations are facing 44% yearly die-off rates and the state copes with drought. During this mass pollination event, a crew of six women costumed in gold performed a five day 100 mile walk through the desert, interviewing farmers and beekeepers along the way.
