An added upside to taking a walk around the neighborhood on a holiday is that a lot of businesses are closed, so you get a chance to check out all of sweet street art on security gates that are rolled up much of the time. While I could not find a tag on this piece, which adorns the security gate for the Lucky Bar on Avenue B, it sure does look like a mohawk-sporting Punk Rocker version of Frank Ape, by the artist Brandon Sines.

Paying attention all the time is an interesting way to go through the day, because you never know what you might find lurking inside of a derelict Fire Alarm Box. This painted plaster cast of a smiling face and fists is the work of street artist Gregos, who really gets around. I’m guessing not everybody will notice that the backside of this otherwise ordinary Stop Sign, located at the corner of Gansevoort and Hudson Streets in the Meatpacking District, gives a subtle endorsement of The Green.

As consumers, we are constantly monitoring what we eat, and scrutinizing food product labels; but we don’t think as deeply about what we allow to touch our skin.
