Must See Movie of The Week: The Hurt Locker

This past Sunday, Geoffrey and I went to see the “Iraqi bomb squad” movie that everyone is talking about, The Hurt Locker. It’s taken me a couple of days to digest my thoughts, because “intense” is really not strong enough of a word to describe this movie-going experience. And I usually don’t like war movies – the exception being Full Metal Jacket – but I really liked The Hurt Locker, and wanted to blog about it, but was having trouble translating my thoughts into words.

This morning I found a really fantastic review of the movie on, of all places, a financial newsletter I read daily at my office job. Must See Film of The Week: It Might Get Loud

It Might Get Loud

When I first heard about Davis Guggenheim’s new documentary, It Might Get Loud – featuring interviews with and jam sessions among guitarists Jimmy Page, Jack White and The Edge – I figured I might go see it, or I might not. That I’m a huge fan of Jimmy Page goes without saying. Led Zeppelin! But I’ve never been able to work up much enthusiasm for anything Jack White does (too much hype always being a big turn off for me). And while I appreciate U2 (having been blown away by them live back in 2001) I certainly would not call myself a fan. But everybody keeps talking about this film – especially the Led Zeppelin fans on my FaceBook page – and Geoffrey wanted to go, so I figured what the hell. Even though my expectations were only moderate, I am really glad I saw this film because it was really just fantastic. I Saw Moon And It Was Really Good

Hey what’s up? How is your Saturday going? I just got in from a pass through Trader Joe’s (milk chocolate covered peanut butter crackers, mmm) that I made on my way home from seeing the amazing new film, Moon. All I knew about this film going in was that David Bowie’s son, Duncan Jones is the director, and it stars Sam Rockwell (who was so excellent in Choke). If you don’t know much about Moon, I would recommend not reading any reviews, because the element of surprise that you get from the film as its plot unfolds is so worth it. Moon features some familiar themes of advanced future technology and life on an isolated space station that we saw in classic sci-fi films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Silent Running. But I was really not expecting the twists and turns that Jones throws at you in this truly original story. Rockwell’s portrayal of Sam Bell, an astronaut who wonders if he is going insane as his three-year mission on the space station comes to a close, is top notch and finely nuanced, and Kevin Spacey is fun as the voice of the ship’s computer, Gerty. Clint Mansell (Pop Will Eat Itself), who does the soundtrack music for all of Darren Aronofsky’s films, wrote the score. Moon is a very beautiful, eerie and touching film that I am giving two thumbs up!

Must-See Film of the Week: District 9

District 9

I’ve never been much of a fan of the Star Wars or Star Trek franchises of movie making, but I do love a good, straightforward science fiction film on the rare occasion that one makes it to the big screen. After what seems like a very long wait, that occasion has finally arrived. Last night Geoffrey and I were squealing like little piggies with excitement at a screening of the new Peter Jackson produced film, District 9; a film that everyone will be talking about. Directed spectacularly by first time director Neill Blomkamp, this film has a seemingly simple plot which unfolds into one of the deepest, most thought-provoking back stories I can recall seeing in a film in possibly decades.
