Legendary rock and roll photographer Jim Marshall died in his sleep Tuesday night (March 23rd). He was 74. Marshall is best known for his iconic shots of Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar at Monterey Pop, The Who greeting the sunrise at Woodstock and Johnny Cash flipping the bird at San Quentin. He was chief photographer at Woodstock and was the only photographer allowed backstage at The Beatles’ final concert. Marshall had a special affinity with rock and roll artists, as he said himself, “I see the music.”

Nick Lowe, Releases Jesus Of Cool

On This Date, February 25th, in 1978: Nick Lowe released his debut album, Jesus Of Cool (entitled Pure Pop for Now People in the states). It contained the singles “(I Love The Sound Of) Breaking Glass,” “Little Hitler” and “So It Goes,” and well as fan favorites like “Marie Provost” – with its uber-dark lyrical humor – and Lowe’s delirious ode to Bay City Rollers fanatics everywhere, “Rollers Show.”  Absolutely indispensable British Power Pop.

On This Date, November 27th, In 1970: George Harrison released his first post-Beatles’ solo album All Things Must Pass. The first triple album by a solo artist, the original vinyl release featured two records of rock songs and a third, entitled Apple Jam that was composed of informal jams led by Harrison with musician friends and other famous musicians. Containing the massive hit singles “My Sweet Lord” and “What Is Life,” the album was eventually certified 6x Platinum by the RIAA.
